Bill Buford Likes Gordon Ramsay, He Really Does

In this week's New Yorker, Bill Buford takes us behind the scenes and into the kitchen of screaming English chef Gordon Ramsay as he opens a restaurant in New York City. Buford's a terrific writer, but I'm not sure we learn anything that surprising in its 12 pages.

Ramsay curses a lot, is a surprisingly understated chef, and is really a good bloke when you drill down and get to know him. The story's big revelation is that Ramsay himself stole the reservation book at Aubergine, his London restaurant, and then accused his former mentor Marco Pierre White of doing it to prevent White from making a deal with Aubergine's principal owners to take over the kitchen from Ramsay.

Interesting, yes. Earthshattering, no. Oh, yes, we learn that Ramsey likes to curse. A lot.

How nice that reality food tv has now become a style. I like to watch Gordon but frankly I cannot stand aspects of his food. It is over directed like a broadway musical. I also think this if an employer treated me with public shame and sexual epitets I would sue his ass off. Harassment on the job is not acceptable in the US. He may find someone else doesn't go quietly into the night whether he is the great Gordon Ramsey or not.

I've eaten at Ramsay's NY outpost, the Maze, and the food is amazing. He can curse all he wants, if the results are that delicious.

Agree with Jerzee. Ramsay is an out dated b-list..c-list celb who only has is bad language and abuse to count on.

He's one big arrogant, self-centered, self-serving, ASS!
