Mid-Range Burgers

After a little more than a year and a half spent focusing primarily on mom-and-pop burger joints on Serious Eats site A Hamburger Today, I felt it was high time to explore the world of burgers in the "casual dining" sector. More than a few AHT readers had emailed expressing the opinion that Houlihan's or Red Robin or T.G.I.Friday's had surprisingly good burgers. Countless television commercials touting the fare at these bar-and-grill type restaurants played a part, too, getting me off the couch and into the booths of four of the nation's most recognizable chains in the course of one day.

My mission was to sample cheeseburgers, collect visual intel, and report my findings to you, our burger-loving readers. I sampled standard cheeseburgers at Houlihan's, Applebee's, T.G.I.Friday's, and Red Robin, asking for medium-rare or as close to it as possible. Below are the results.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: Houlihan'sHoulihan's
Locations: 80 in 21 states [restaurant finder]; reviewed at 139 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn NY 11217
Cost: $8.79 (comes with choice of fries, coleslaw, or tortilla chips and salsa)
Meat: 3/5
Bun: 2/5
Toppings: 4/5
Cheese: 3/5
Presentation: 4/5
Overall: 3/5

First up was Houlihan's, the smallest chain among those that I tried, with 80 locations in 21 states. Of the four casual dining options of the day, Houlihan's was the most upscale, with a decor that might be described as "slightly swanky"--dark wood accents; dark, moody lighting; a conservative amount of framed retro French movie posters on the walls; and a low-key vibe that matched the Stereolab soundtrack that back the muted Jets game on a handful of strategically placed flat-panel TVs. Service was adequate--friendly but not overbearing.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: Houlihan'sI ordered the cheeseburger, advertised on the menu as 100 percent fresh Angus beef, medium-rare, and it arrived at table about ten minutes thereafter, cooked well north of desired doneness, to about medium-well. As all burgers at the four restaurants, this one came standard with lettuce, tomato, and red onion were all fresh-tasting, crisp, and cool. The bun was a bit too thick and also dry, throwing off the meat-to-bun ratio and also doing nothing to help the dryness of the overcooked patty. The meat itself tasted like it could have been a contender, had it not been done to within an inch of its life. And, for what looked like a beefy burger as presented, the patty itself only contributed about half an inch to the sandwich's thickness.

Mid-Range Burger RoundupApplebee's
Locations: 1,804 in 49 states [restaurant finder]; reviewed at 395 Flatbush Ave. Extension, Brooklyn NY 11201
Cost: $7.59 (comes with fries)
Meat: 2/5
Bun: 4/5
Toppings: 3/5
Cheese: 2/5
Presentation: 3/5
Overall: 2/5

Not more than a few blocks away from the Houlihan's, Applebee's was the next stop on my burger tour. With 1,804 locations in 49 states, you've likely been to an Applebee's, so descriptions are almost unnecessary. This one varied very little from the ones I'd grown up around near Overland Park, Kansas, which is corporate home to the chain--plenty of art on the walls to look at, brass rails, and stained-glass lighting fixtures. Service here, too, was friendly, with very attentive hosts and servers, and the food arrived quickly.

Mid-Range Burger RoundupThe meat here is also billed as 100 percent Angus beef, and, as the menu states, "All burgers are cooked to medium/medium-well." "Are the burgers fresh or frozen?" I asked the waiter. "Frozen," he replied. Not looking good, I thought, but resolved to give the burger a fair shake. I asked for it as close to medium as possible, but it came out (sloppily presented) very well done and so over salted as to be almost inedible. I was unable to ascertain the flavor of the beef for all the salt. Lettuce, tomato, and onion were all fresh tasting, and the bun was very good--perfectly toasted, soft and squishy, and cornmeal-dusted for some texture on top--but they couldn't make up for the patty they accompanied. I gave up after eating a quarter of this burger.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: T.G.I.Friday'sT.G.I.Friday's
Locations: 576 in 47 states [restaurant finder]; reviewed at 372 Fulton Street Brooklyn NY 11201
Cost: $10.99
Meat: 3/5
Bun: 3/5
Toppings: 2/5
Cheese: 4/5
Presentation: 3/5
Overall: 3/5

Upset at the lackluster showing at Applebee's, I was looking for burger redemption at T.G.I.Friday's. I ended up at an interesting location: the former Gage & Tollner, a landmark Brooklyn restaurant until its closing in February 2004. Though locals bemoaned the fact that a chain replaced the venerable institution, a T.G.I.Friday's is not entirely out of place here; it moved into a space with cherrywood accents, a mahogany bar, and cut-glass chandeliers--just the type of atmosphere the branches I've visited elsewhere try to evoke.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: T.G.I.Friday'sI skipped the Jack Daniel's burger (special JD-infused sauce) in favor of a regular cheeseburger so as to keep T.G.I.Friday's on a level playing field with the other sandwiches eaten. Here, the menu made no mention of Angus beef nor issued any prescriptive proclamations as to doneness; I ordered medium-rare with American cheese. Again, the burger that arrived at table was cooked far beyond what I had ordered, though this time to medium-well. Presentation was adequate, and the burger certainly looked hefty but, as at Houlihan's, the patty here was a relatively small part of equation. Despite the overcooking, there was still some juiciness left in the beefy-tasting patty, and the bun was lightly toasted and pillowy. Toppings were haphazardly stacked and of subpar quality, I ended up jettisoning the shredded lettuce, too-thick tomatoes, and mushy pickles that tasted more like cucumbers.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: Red RobinRed Robin
Locations: 307 in 35 states [restaurant finder]; reviewed at 265 State Hwy. Route 3E, Clifton NJ 07014
Cost: $8.99 (comes with "bottomless" steak fries)
Meat: 4/5
Bun: 4/5
Toppings: 4/5
Cheese: 3/5
Presentation: 5/5
Overall: 4/5

The last burger of the day, which I ate sometime around 10 p.m., was from Red Robin. For this stop, I took out a Zipcar and made the 14-mile, two-hour journey to Clifton, New Jersey, the nearest location to my home. Perhaps it's a bit unfair to throw this one in the mix, since Red Robin is a casual-dining concept based on burgers, whereas the other three do not place the noble sandwich at the center of their business. But it serves as an example of what the other bar and grills should aim for. Here, the burger's price was in line with the first three sites but it far outstripped them in terms of quality.

Mid-Range Burger Roundup: Red RobinRed Robin has an atmosphere that's similar to, but a bit more staid, than Applebee's--call it Applebee's Lite. Like the Applebee's I visited, the hosts and servers were very friendly and attentive, and the food arrived at table in almost no time. The 22 specialty burgers on the menu here, all made from fresh ground beef, are cooked "with some pink or no pink," according to my server. I ordered "some pink." Of the chains, this one cooked the burger closest to the temperature I had ordered. I didn't see much pink in the patty, but it remained juicy nonetheless. Toppings were of good quality, sandwiched with patty and melted cheese within a toasted, sesame-seed covered bun. Presentation was flawless, with the burger arriving at table neatly wrapped yet bursting from its wax-paper wrapping, accompanied by a handful of steak fries in a plastic burger basket. As with the other three burgers, the meat-to-bun ratio skewed a bit in favor of bready. Still, after 2.25 burgers earlier in the day, I felt compelled to finish this one.

And thus ended my day and night recon of the mid-range casual-dining burgerworld. Though I'm disheartened by what I found, I realize there are some decent sandwiches to be had. For that reason, I will expand my scope and explore other chains in the near future--notably Ruby Tuesday, which had closed for the evening by the time I made it through the Lincoln Tunnel. Also on the list: Bennigan's, Chili's, and any others that you might wish to send me to (leave your suggestions in the Comments).

A chain that started here in burger-crazy San Antonio, Fuddrucker's, does pretty well. They used to actually grind their own meat, and had halves of beef hanging in glass-doored refers, but don't anymore, so that is a question mark. But the buns are still made on the premises, are fresh, and actually pretty good, and you top your own with a sort of salad bar that has its lettuce, onions, tomato offered sliced or chopped, as well as salsa, jalapenos and pickles. Maybe the jalapenos are only available in Texas, I don't know. They also have hot cheese sauce to put on the burgers, with or without jalapenos.

We have a Red Robin nearby, and it is open late. My husband was politickin' all year, and so we ate there quite a bit at the end of a long day and night of grippin' and grinnin'. He is crazy about the big one with the fried egg on it, and I don't like the fries, so I get a side salad instead with a regular burger like the one you wrote about.

San Antonio is a burger-crazy town with very opinionated folks, and we have a huge number of mom and pop and local chain burger places. The newest one opened about a year ago, called "Bigz", and it was started by Andrew Weissman of Le Reve. It's the burger place for the upscale fully-loaded Hummer drivers to bring their soccer kids after the game. The burgers are nothing special, although there are some different sauces you can ask for, like rosemary mayonaise, which change daily. Their onion rings are the thing I order, and Mr. dks gets his burger "dirty" (with a fried egg on top). But he'd rather go to a local joint called Chris Madrid's near downtown. If you eat their biggest burger completely, they give you a tee-shirt. The burgers are large in diameter on extra-large buns, but I just get the nachos and a beer.

See? I'm one of those opinionated San Antonians, too.

But look for Fuddruckers. I'd like your opinion on the only place in town I really like to go for a burger.

Thanks for the Fuddrucker's suggestion, dksbook! I initially had it on my list, but the nearest one is in western New York state. I'll hit up Fuddrucker's when I visit my family for Christmas -- there's one near where I grew up, along with almost any other casual dining restaurant you can imagine.

If I am not mistaken there is also a Fuddrucker's @ one of the casinos in CT.

there is on one route 1 in New Brunswick NJ. not too far from rutgers.

there used to be a Red Robin in King's Plaza shopping mall in Brooklyn. I'm sure I got dragged there once as a kid.

Adam, sorry i haven't done the Madison, WI burger writeup yet. I still have lots of photos on my laptop.

Adam - the residents of 19 states are lucky to be able to fast-food it at Steak & Shake. The Steakburger (claims are that it's made of steak cuts) is first seared and then cooked to order. The plain bun is toasted - toppings per request. The closet to NYC I believe is in Pittsburgh.

When I visit friends in Ohio this is among my first stops - a truly delicious chain burger if there ever was one.

@Astrid: Good to hear from you! Long time, no e! Hope all's well with you. Yeah. Last time I was at King's Plaza, I didn't see a RR. Then again, I wasn't looking for it. I'd love to read a Madison burger writeup. Lemme guess: butter burgers?

@Livetotravel: A reader of A Hamburger Today recently sang the praises of Steak 'n' Shake. It's on my to-try list for when I go home, too.

Adam - There's a Fuddrucker's on Route 4 East in Paramus, about a 10-15min drive from the GW Bridge, probably no further (if not closer) than the Red Robin you visited in Clifton.

Those commercials for Ruby Tuesday make me want to try their burgers... i've never seen one here in CA though.

Agree on Fuddrucker's. Not nearly as good as it used to be (when they did the butchering onsite in an area visible to customers, and kept the menu more limited), but still consistently above average.

Red Robin on the other hand can vary wildly depending on location (mostly differences in management). I've given up on the burger's at Red Robin, and stick with the Fish and Chips when I'm forced to go there. If I want a consistently good cheap burger, I'll go to In-n-Out.

The best mid-price chain burger I've had is from Cheesecake Factory, the Chophouse burger. Large quality meat patty cooked to order on a good grilled bun with fresh crisp fries. Most of the Cheesecake Factory menu is trendy garbage often too complicated for the limited kitchen staff to pull off, but the simple dishes are well prepared with quality ingredients.

As for AppleBee's or TGIF's, I'm surprised you bothered. Heavily marketed junk.

Another solidly good burger-from-a-chain can be found at Houston's. They'll actually give you a lovely patty as rare or as well-done as you want it. Dripping with juices, it's a messy eat, but it hits the spot!

Charcoal Pit in Delaware. This place takes you back. The best char pit broiled burgers, fries, onion rings and fries. Get a milkshake they make them from scratch one at a time with fresh dipped ice cream. There are 4 or so locations, all good. If your driving through Delaware stop in and enjoy.

Adam, there is a fuddrucker's on rt 4 in paramus, nj. It's about 25-30 minutes outside manhattan. You're not missing much. The BEST chain burger is Houston's hands down. Loosly packed meat, good bun and fresh toppings. The fries are sick as well. I'm a white mana hackensack regular...I know good burgers.

oooh national chains. i dig it. if you're making your way through them, outback has burgers on their menus too.

it's refreshing to see you venture out into the chains of "casual dining" because the dichotomy between a "serious eater" and the rest of us is kind of unsettling at times. it almost borderlines on blue state eater or red state eater. real foodie vs the rest of us!

anyway, i see this as a good thing. i dunno how national chains compare to mom & pops, but it's good to know the national chains are reviewed at least. keep up the good work.

@Matt E. & Davey: Thanks for the Fuddrucker's location info. I didn't find the NJ locations on their website because their "Fuddrucker's Finder" is a bit clunky to use. Wish I would have did a more thorough search.

@Mimi: We actually did a Houston's review on A Hamburger Today. I was going to mention Houston's in this roundup, but Houston's seemed to be a notch above these restaurants in terms of price and quality. But, yeah: Houston's beats all these hands down.

@JerzeeTomato: I learned about the Charcoal Pit when doing some research on Delaware burgers. What about Jake's? I've heard those are some great Delaware-based burgers.

@Pauper: Will try Outback, too, but more important, I'm happy you liked the casual dining element here.

I'm working on an FAQ to the question "What is a Serious Eater?" Our bywords here at Serious Eats are "passionate, discerning, inclusive," with a lot of weight on "inclusive." I think the confusion comes about because the name of the site refers to a phrase that its founder, Ed Levine, uses. Whenever he has a good slice of pizza, apple pie, or some fancypants Thomas Keller somethin'-or-other, he's like, "Man, that's some serious eats!" And so the name just sorta stemmed from that. As long as YOU are serious about a food item being good, then it's serious eats and you are a serious eater. As I like to say, that could be anything from fairground to foie gras, or in my case, pizza and burgers, two of the most egalitarian foods around.

Max and Erma's has excellent burgers. The poppyseed bun is toasted to perfection and the meat is juicy and flavorful. http://www.maxandermas.com/Locations.cfm

It's interesting the point that Pauper and a few others have made about the idea of "serious eats." Serious Eats is all about burgers, pizza, and the foods I have been writing about for a long time. We are gourmet populists. We're looking for honest, real food food that's delicious. The name comes from what I usually say when I eat a truly great slice of pizza or hamburger: "That's a serious slice of pizza" or "That's a serious burger." Serious eaters are everywhere. Hell, I don't even care much for caviar.

I'd like to cast a vote for the sliders at Pizzeria Uno. Surprisingly good, and they WILL cook them medium to medium rare.

fuddrucker's kicks ass

Adam I have not been to Jake's yet. But I want to. When I go I will let you know all the gory details.

Fuddrucker's, in my opinion, is by far the best chain burger -- up there with the best burgers period -- and well above Red Robin. There used to be two in Manhattan, but they have unfortunately been gone for 10 years or so. The nearest one now is in Paramus. Its well worth the trip.

@Makanmata: Good to hear from you here on Serious Eats! And about burgers. Just like on A Hamburger Today. I'll try the Fuddrucker's in Overland Park, Kansas, when I'm home over Xmas.

You should also add maybe Fatburger to the list? They're only in about 13 states [lots of them in California and Nevada], but there are several in New Jersey: one very close by in Jersey City [on Washington Street, between Montgomery and Columbus]. Good, freshly-made burgers.

FIVE GUYS burgers in Charlotte, NC (other locations on website) had one of the best burgers I've ever had. This is the only burger I've had that rivals IN N OUT BURGER.... true burger nirvana.

fuddrucker's is the best!

Fuddruckers IS great. BUT.....I want you to try a burger at a cool bar in Springfield, Missouri.... WF CODY'S. They are huge cooked to order burgers. THE BEST AROUND. Another item you could try is a HUGE prok tenderloin sandwich. next time you are in town head down to springfield.

THE COUNTER IN SANTA MONICA CALIF, LOCATED AT 2901 OCEAN PK. PHONE 310-399-8311 HAS THE BEST BURGERS AND TOPPINGS BAR NONE. EVERYTHING IS UNDER $10.00, MADE FRESH, CHECK OUT THEIR WEB SITE

J. Alexander's has, by far, the best burger I have ever eaten. They grind their own Certified Angus Chuck in-house. They test it to make sure it has the proper fat percentage mandated by their corporate cookbook. Then they grill the burger on a wood-fire grill. It is served with leaf lettice, cirspy red onion, tomato, and pickles (3). Tillamook cheddar is the cheese of choice, but monterrey jack and swiss are also available. The chain operates only 28 restaurants, and might be considered upscale by comparison to your other burger restaurant selections; however, TGI Fridays charges $10.99 for a burger, J. Alexander's charges $10. I urge you to try it!

You should try Cheeburger. They even have the 1lb. Burger, that's a challenge. If you eat it all your picture goes up on the wall.

@Marcelhouston: Thanks for the J. Alexander's recommendation! That sounds like a burger-maker after my own heart!

@Shayla: I'll try Cheeburger next time I'm in Jersey (I think they have a NJ location, anyway ...)

FIVE GUYS IS THE BEST!!!!

you must try Five Guys Burgers and Fries. You won't be disappointed.

I recommend Fuddruckers for review too. Also, many steakhouses like Saltgrass and Outback have excellent burgers on the menu. You might want to include those in your next review - if you can resist the steaks, that is! LOL

Try Culvers, home of the butterburger. The bun is grilled and the burger is JUICY. Topped the way you would at home.
ALso I agree with Steak N Shake. We eat there every chance we get, but the closest one is 2 hours away.

Try an Outbacker @ Outback- My favorite burger by far. Fuddruckers is pretty good too.

Ruby Tuesday's Triple Prime Burger is absolutely HEAVENLY!!!
A MUST TRY!!! ENJOY!!!

I definitely think you should check out Ruby Tuesday, especially the Triple Prime burger. Any burger can be made to your liking as far as to what temperature you want it cooked as well as what you do and don't want on it. They're in a transitional period now as far as looks are concerned but the food is great!

I also go for Fuddruckers!!!

My family and friends' favorite is Joe's American Bar & Grill. Our regular place is in the Mall at Short Hills, but we've also been to the one in the Garden State Plaza a few times. My brother and sister-in-law go to the Nashua, NH location. Joe's is a Boston company and as far as I know, the two NJ spots are the farthest south (none in NY). If I can't have Don's in Livingston anymore, this has been a worthy successor for us!

You should try any Fuddruckers. I have ate at several of their restaurants, and they all have great burgers!

Here's a few places to try:

Outback Steak house, 8 oz sirloin burger, now once in a while I do get a a dry burger, but 9 our of 10 they are cooked the way I like em, med-well, all depends on whos on the grill.

Cheeseburger in Paradise Edison, NJ - only been there twice, the burgers are pretty good.

Famous Dave's - Their burger is very very good with their BBQ sauce (Dave Burger)

Dinosour BBQ in NY - Ive only been to the one on 131st and they have food food all round, burgers are really good.

Enjoy!

Adam, you MUST MUST MUST eat a cheeseburger at Houston's. I know there's one in NJ & a couple in Manhattan. It's an upscale steakhouse with a modern/relaxed atmosphere, but the cheeseburgers are the BEST. Fresh meat, topping, & bread. Reasonable priced. It will make you never want to eat a fast food/ typical chain rest. cheeseburger ever again...I'm a cheeseburger nut & have had many, but these are by far the best in my book...

If you're ever in California or Arizona you should get a burger at Islands. A similar chain to Red Robin's, but the burgers are 10 times better. However, if you're in California any burger is eclipsed by the In-N-Out burger, which of course is THE GREATEST BURGER IN THE WORLD.

I saw someone mention it above and agree that everyone should have a burger at Cheeburger Cheeburger! Simply the best burger I have ever tasted and this is coming from a born and raised southern boy where great food is common place so it's gotta be GOOD to get my attention! So, if you are lucky enough to live in a city where there is one of these restaurants you should make haste and get over there now! I think they are only in 16 states but have been voted "Best Burger" 28 different cities already!

I agree with Ianrockstar. I was just about to suggest it myself. Their burgers are amazing. They are by no means healthy though. Lunch there will provide your 2000 calories for the day. But it IS the greatest burger I have ever had. They have locations in CA, NV, CO, and here in AZ. You have got to try it. MMMMMmmmmm

If you get a chance to sample some in the Dallas area. I'd recommend Snuffer's and Scotty P's.

Best burger at a chaine, even when slightly overcooked, and I like them RARE...is Cracker Barrel!

I also meant to mention Max & Erma's in Shadyside in Pittsburgh. We always ate there while my son attended Carnegie Mellon University.

Outback...it used to be called the Mad Max burger but now I believe it is just the bacon cheeseburger. We usually can't finish our fries because there is so much burger!

you should try a burger from Cheeburger Cheeburger. they can only be order medium, mediumwell or well done but they are amazing! so sides come with it, but or a fring (fries and onion rings) basket and you'll be amazed.

also the Chessy Bacon Cheeseburger at TGI Fridays is to die for. add a side of JD sauce and you're in heaven.

I've worked at both places so i've eaten plenty of them!! and i still go back for more!

Ya gotta come down south to Nashville,Tn and eat a Fat Mo burger..voted the best burger in town year after year. Its not only the biggest but they are they BEST. This is their local website http://www.fatmos.com/
So come on down :)

T. Carter

The best burger I've ever had in my life came from this place called Steve's Dakota Grill. It's a 10 oz steakburger, fresh, with fresh toppings served with a huge pickle! And when I say 10 oz, it's actually that big! It was soooooo delicious, served on a ciabatta bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. Here's the website for the restaurant, www.stevesdakotagrill.com there are locations in Findlay Ohio, Marion Ohio, Medina Ohio, and Ontario Ohio. GO THERE!!! You won't be disappointed!!!

Ok I have two favorite burgers ever!! First is from 5 Guys Burgers and Fries. They basically 4 types of burgers. Big burger, Little burger, Big cheeseburger, and little cheeseburger. The difference is two patties. You can also get bacon on these. You can get any toppings no extra charge from: grilled onions, tomatoes, fresh onions, pickles, grilled mushrooms, green peppers, jalepenos, ketchup, mustard, A-1 sauce, BBQ sauce, hot sauce. They have great homemade fries...but this is a burger article.
My other favorite place is a local place in the Birmingham, AL area called Costa's Steakhouse. They have great burgers! They have a "California Burger" with grilled onions. They have a bison burger (I haven't had it but it looks great). My personal favorite there is the regular grilled cheeseburger. It is fantastic. Juicy. Flavorful. The best I have EVER had...You got to try it!

I don't know if they have Burger Supreme out there, but here in Provo, Utah they make the best burger ever!! Not to mention that their milkshakes are to die for, too. If you have a chance to try a burger from there, take it. You'll be glad you did. :)

tam i am

You have got to try FUDDRUCKERS!! Seriously, it is the BEST place for a burger!! I always get the 2/3 lb. with bacon and cheese! And I top it off with a slice of tomato, lettuce, and pickles! I swear everything is PERFECT!! Not only do they have amazing burgers, but their fries are to die for as well! You really need to try it, if you haven't already! :)

I have been to all these places that you sampled in search of the great cheese burger,I finally found it.A rather new chain that i found is in middletown,ny. The place is called CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE,rare burgers the way a rare burger should be.This is the freshest tastiest burgers in ny,better then pub burgers, backyard bbqs etc....FUDDRUCKERS ARE OK YET GREASY RATHER THEN JUICY.

If you have Razoo's in your area you must try their cheeseburger. Comes with bacon but I typically remove it. I order it medium well and so the meat usually has a crunchy outer layer but juicy and moist in the center, with the perfect bun to burger ratio. The buns are buttered and grilled to perfection. The meat is divine and the seasoning is just right. We thought we had found the perfect burger in the Ft. Worth, TX area at Papa's Burgers (which is excellent too) but Razoo's is currently our #1 burger. The fries are perfect too.

Although you were primarily dealing with "casual dining" by far the best burger I have ever had comes from a west coast chain called In-N-Out Burger. I just adore their Double Double burger w/ onion, unfortunately I now live on the east coast and am unable to get one when I want it. The closest locations to the east coast are located in Las Vegas which is where I had my last experience which I'm sorry to say was far too long ago. So if you can make it to Vegas or points west I would highly recommend picking up one of these.

In and Out, definitely. However, for some atmosphere, the best burger is at Mimi's Cafe. And I've been to Houlihans, Red Robin, Applebee's and TGIF. None can hold a candle to Mimi's. http://www.mimiscafe.com/

if you are ever if florida, there is a place called Copper Monkey. it is located in gainesville, fl off university ave. directly across from campus. they have the best cheese burgers. always juicy, cooked to your order, and comes with a side of fries. it is a small place with a big college atmosphere! definitely a MUST!

If I had to chose the best burger it would be between two places:

I was happy to see Fuddruckers mentioned quite often. I would have to agree that they have an amazing burger.

I did not read every comment but as far as I know I did not see Beef O'Bradys on the list. I am not sure if there is one anywhere near the New York area, seeing as I live in Georgia. If there is however I would highly recommend eating a burger at Beef O'Bradys.

IF YOU EVER HAPPEN TO BE IN NORTH CAROLINA I THINK YOU SHOULD VISIT LOGANS, AND STEAK AND SHAKE, THE HAVE THE BEST BURGERS.

Come to South Texas and try Whataburger or Dairy Queen, you won't be disappointed!!! Whataburger is one the fastest growing chains here in Texas and you've got to try them to find out why! WHAT A BURGER- you can't beat that slogan :)

you might want to try the following:

1. Outback Steak House
2. Red Onion
3. Dave & Buster's
4. Nation's Hamburger's

if you're ever in the california area some amazing places to get burgers are actually in my home town of albany!

1. big al's burger (has been around for many many years. old folk around here remember when it first opened. very good classic hamburgers whether you want a single, a double or even a "baby" burger. they know how to cook it just right and the toppings are always fresh and crispy.

2. Jodie's (really good food whether it's a hamburger or breakfast or fried chicken on weekends. it's a very small "hole in the wall" type place where the atmosphere is laid back. Jodie's is a very great place to go if you want to try something new... his fries are to die for! if you like a kick on your fries he uses some special spices that are sure to make your mouth water.

I like steak n shake, but the burgers are a bit whimpy for me, although the flavor is good, I love Fuddruckers, burgers are perfect, and the toppings are always fresh and are in a bar-type area so you can top it yourself with the topping and the amount you want. the nearest Fuddruckers to me is about an hour, and I dont mind the trip.

You might want to consider adding Fuddruckers to your list to try!

Dave and Buster's has a decent burger.

oh and also i forgot another place to try is only in california and the exeption of las vegas i'd suggest in n out burger. their double double is awesome and you can choose between regular onions or grilled onions. and if you know the ins and outs of in and out you might know their "special" hidden menu! you must come to the bay area! you don't know what you're missing when it comes to burgers.

NOBODY listed has told you the best burgers on the planet!
I would bet my life that once you taste this burger you will never feel the same about burgers again. Find the nearest STEAK-N-SHAKE & have a Double Cheese Steakburger.
I guarantee you'll never taste anything else so filling.
They started in Normal, illi & went south....I eat them all the time here in Florida.

In NYC, There's Jackson Hole in Queens, right off the Grand Central Parkway, in Astoria. There is also another Jackson Hole in Bayside, Queens also.

You seriously have to try Fuddrucker's they have the best burgers I have eaten in years. You can order the size of the patty you want, from1/4 lb to 2 lbs of meat and then you add your own condiments. There are several in the Boston area.

Roy Rogers also still makes some of the best burgers I have eaten, and if they are at highway rest stops I always stop there for my meals.

These 10 Oz. Burgers Are 100% Pure Usda Choice Beef...
One of the best I've ever had in NYC!!!

Hambricks 1/4 pound burger is great if you're in the bay area; I enjoy Kua Aina Burgers on the north shore of Oahu when I'm back home.

another place i forgot to mention is only available in california (las vegas is the only exception) but in n out burger is amazing! i love their double double cheeseburger and you can choose between regular or grilled onions. if you know the in and outs of in n out burger you might know their "Special" menu! you might get lucky and find it if you google search it.

In the south east when I want a burger and am not a "burger joint" I prefer to go to O'Charley's.

Fuddruckers, Steak and Shake are all great eats. But ther is only one In and Out Double Double animal style with fries and a strawberry shake. They are only in the west (LA, OC, Phoenix, Tuscon and Vegas). I drive from Houston to Phoenix just to get a fix. You need to try.

If you ever get over to Salem, Oregon go to a place called THE RAM. It's a restaurant and brewery and they have the BEST burgers AND the best beer. It would be worth the trip.

sorry, i know i just commented, but IMO fuddruckers is the best chain burger, but IMO, its the smaller restaurants, or even the pubs/bars that seem to have the best burgers

I personally prefer the burgers at The Longhorn Steakhouse. They are huge and a little messy, but no matter how you get them cooked--whether it's med-rare or well-done--they remain juicy and flavorful. The burgers are fresh, not frozen and they season them very well. Their steaks are fabulous as well.

Since you live in New York there's a place you should try in upper Manhattan. Take the A train all the way up to 207th St. There's a place on Broadway just past the NE corner of 207th Street called Piper's Kilt. I lived there for eleven years and it was always the best place for a good burger.

I would like to know how Hardies "resturaunt quality 6 dollar burger" really stacks up to the resturaunt burgers.

Try THE RAM in Salem Oregon!!!! GREAT BURGERS and GREAT BEER

I really like the Grand Lux Burger melt at the Grand Lux Cafe (a branch of The Cheesecake Factory).

Island's has an awesome Hawaiian burger-it's my favorite on their menu.

Drive North a little on Route 209 to Historic Stone Ridge NY and go to The Nibble Nook. Burgers are 1/3 lb. fresh locally raised 100% Black Angus served at whatever Temp you wan't them with FF $5.99

Four whole restaurants?!? Way to leave no stone unturned!! Fudruckers, Ruby Tuesdays, Bennigans, Chilis, and that's just to name a few. How about you do some real research and then get back to us. Stop wasting our time!

I'm not sure they're in your area, but if they are you should try Five Guys. They're new in my town in Florida, and they have the juiciest burger I've ever eaten.

I skimmed most of these but I didn't see anyone from Sacramento,CA mention "The Squeeze Inn", small little hole in the wall, well known, on Fruitridge Rd.

Great place to try.

Agree about Fuddruckers. Also, Billy Goat Tavern

I go to Las Vegas a few times a year and the first place I stop after picking up the rental car is In-N-Out Burger on Tropicana and Dean Martin. Best by far IMHO. You can get 2 double doubles for what you get at the midrange places that you reviewed. Fresh never frozen and the fries are pressed from whole potatoes on the spot. Awesome.

There is a small burger chain in Austin, TX called Dan's Hamburgers, which has reeaally good burgers and fries and shakes. But, I gotta admit, I've never in my whole life had a burger as damn good as a Fuddrucker's burger.

what about coco's

I clicked here after reading this article on Yahoo to suggest Fuddrucker's, and I'm glad to see several other people have suggested it as well. Fuddrucker's has supplanted Red Robin as my favorite local place to get a burger. Besides having a condiment bar where you can add your favorite topping to your burger (including pico de gallo), you can select your burger's meat from a list that includes buffalo, turkey, ostrich, elk, vegetarian, kobe beef, or regular beef.

However, my ALL-TIME FAVORITE favorite burger was had at the House of Blues (although my judgment could have been impaired because I was ravenously hungry at the time) while on vacation. Unfortunately, there isn't a House of Blues near where I live.

Not Islands. Not anymore. Years ago, they were definitely pretty good, but they've gotten to the point where I won't even eat them. And I'm not one to walk away from even a halfway decent burger.

My husband and I will drive 2 hours to Universal Studios Orlando, pay for parking and eat at Jimmy Bufffet's Margaritaville for a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" , I like mine with lettuce and tomatoes Hines 57 and french fried potatoes, big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer, just like the song says.

im not sure where else there located but if ur ever in st peters/st charles misouri ( jsut outside st louis) theres a place called cullivers and they have what they refer to as butter burgers and let me just say there a small sample of what food in heaven must taste like :)

My hubby and I are always on the search for the perfect burger.
As far as chains go, I think Fuddruckers is best. As for a local...
the Shantytown Bar & Grill in Bloomington, Mn.
Best bar burger weve ever had!

If you want a awesome burger you need to go to Loomis Wisconsin, at a place called Loopy's Bar & Grill that is the best burger out there.

I suggest trying Jackson Hole on Madison Avenue or on Columbus Avenue / near West 62nd???

I used to eat there all the time when I lived there and they are huge and fresh made from unfrozen meat... I haven't been there in a long time but they are great as well as the fries.

you have got to try LITTON'S in Knoxville,Tennessee.the best burger around.

you have got to try LITTON'S in Knoxville,Tennessee.the best burger around.

Culvers is a fast food chain with restaurants in Austin and Dallas Texas, but I don't know where else. Their "butter burgers" are fantastic. The fries are crinkle cut, which I love, and they have frozen custard (YUM!!). But this blog is about the burgers. And theirs are sinful.

Well, actually the best burger I've ever had is one I made myself. The trick to a good moist burger is to mash the spices you want into a ball of raw meat, bake it til its almost done and then fry it on a grill. But it the way of restaraunts, a great is called Calamity Jane's Restaraunt. They are scattered around the nation. Their menu is about 90% hamburgers and they make the biggest hamburger I've evr seen. On top of the that they make the hamburger exactly how you want it. (althoughI I've never asked for a specific rarity/ cooked level) The atmosphere is ver old west which can seem a little seedy, but its a good place. Check it out, and if you're making a hamburger at home, try my advice.

Ted's Montana Grill the burgers are very good. The meat is all-natural and fresh, not only that the restaurant is environmentaly friendly.

I don't know how many branches there are of Friendly's, but the past 3 or 4 times I've been there they have had fantastic burgers. Very juicy and delicious all with very fresh toppings!! Check them out!

Oh and the Fuddrucker's you are talking about in Western NY is about 20 minutes from my house! We go there frequently and their burgers are the best!! We love being able to put on as many toppings as we like and they are very fresh!!

You gotta try the various amazing burgers at Cheesecake Factory!

the place i like to eat burgers at most would have to be in Emporia Kansas called J's diner, its not like a chain at all, its a small mom and pop diner with a very small space to eat in, you sit on stools or at a small table, the waiter takes your order and you watch as they make your meal. I prefer the pizza burger which is the most amazing sandwich I've ever eaten to this day and I grew up in a restaurant atmosphere. Try it sometime if your ever in Kansas. The second one you should try is S&S cafe on highway 50, in Emporia. Right across from what is now the closed Tyson Foods plant.

This is more of a question than a comment. In the review of the Red Robin burger, you mentioned a "14-mile, two-hour journey to Clifton, New Jersey". Was the two hours for just the travel time, or did that include the time at Red Robin?

Come to my house. I'll make you the best damm turkey burger you've ever had! It's all in the spice profile for the meat and my secret, innovative sauce.

Seriously if you're ever in Dallas try Who's Who Burgers or Keller's(various locations)

For Super Bowl sunday, I'll be trying to go to ESPN Zone to watch my Giants. I'll be ordering what they call the "Triple Double Cheeseburger". It's TWO 8 oz. burgers with three types of cheeses (American, Cheddar, and Swiss) and chipolte mayo. I had this before and I barely finished it, that's how big it was.

While it comes from a higher (much higher) end chain, I learned the secret to eating a great, cheap burger from lunch while working for a CPA firm:
1 - Ruth's Chris steakburger ($11.99) - best served with melted bleu cheese at a med-rare temp/cook style. Served w/ your choice of toppings. 2 - Best mom-and-pop: Tessaro's in Bloomfield/Pittsburgh, PA (again, best served med-rare with a sharp cheddar or crumbled bleu cheese and desired toppings).

These are the two best I have had. Both are at the higher range and under some of the costs you have looked at. If anyone wants further information please email me at greg_wehn@yahoo.com

I have traveled across the country and even internation during my career and these are by far the best 2 for the money!!!

Tessaro's?
I go to Pittsburgh every couple years, what a place to visit.

I agree with everyone about Fuddruckers. They have awesome burgers and they'll cook them medium-rare if you want...which is what I prefer. I like the fixin's bar and the hot cheese sauce....it's great for dipping the fries. Another great chain burger is at Uno's (formerly Pizzeria Uno). I know, who goes to a pizza joint and gets a burger?? I do! I love their pizzas but when I want a big, juicy (cooked medium-rare) burger, their 10 ounce burger is primo. The other best burger I ever had was at a resort recently. The Hyatt Regency Pier 66 resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has a spot on the intercoastal waterway called the Pelican Grille. It's on the second floor of a building right on the water and if you sit outside you can watch the boats and cruise ships go by. The ambience is awesome but the burger with carmelized onions and gorgonzola cheese is spectacular! Melted in my mouth...can't wait to get another one! Enjoy everybody!

Steak 'N' Shake!

Oh, and Cheddar's. Though Steak 'N' Shake is what I get cravings for.

Ok, you are going to call me crazy. I too was on the hunt for a good old cheeseburger. Let me start by saying I would agree with your assessment of the burgers you tried. Now the crazy part....Give Denny's a try, I was pleasantly surprised with the plain old cheeseburger. Fresh veggies, hearty, but not overpowering bun, and the burger itself was in my opinion, every bit as good as Red Robin. Good luck with your search can’t wait to read the results.

Fuddruckers in the SouthEast
Hardee's / Carls Jr.
Some people think What-A-Burger is great

Logan's Roadhouse has a good burger. They aren't frozen, and they grind the meat themselves. And Logan's is known for its meat. There are two in PA, Wilkes Barr and York. Their Roadies, mini burgers, are quites tasty too.

Whenever you are in the West Cost area, especially California, you MUST have the Double-Double at In-N-Out Burger. There is one in Rhonert Park. It is a fast food chain, but unlike Burger King and McDonalds, In-N-Out burgers don't leave you with a stomachache. If you are wanting they are also in Nevada and Arizona, but I don't know how their wait line is. Our In-N-Out is always crowded at all times of day, but the wait is definitely worth it!

Another is a rare sight. Maid-Rite is the only loose meat hamburger franchise. It is mainly in Iowa, but there are some in some of the surrounding states. They are like Sloppy Joes without the Slop. And with pickles and cheese. Very good nonetheless.

You should definitely try the burgers at Andy's. I don't know if there are any located near you or not, but their burgers are awesome. Also, Cook Out is good and cheap.

Ha! Amazing, but I too was going to suggest Denny's (duncan beat me to it). We too were pleasantly surprised...I'm not as much a Denny's fan as my wife. Maybe it's just that the cook at our local Denny's (Lake Forest, CA) knows how to make a good burger, I don't know...but it's very good.

Again, maybe it's the local Fuddrucker's that has marred its image for us, but we've had disappointment 3 out of the last 4 or 5 times we've gone.

And I do not like their new menu. When we used to go and get the burger and "build our own" with fresh tomatoes, onions, lettuce, melted cheese, etc, etc...and maybe add grilled onions (for an additional quarter)...it was definitely worth the little extra you paid over all others. Now, I think they hope you don't know about the Original and will ADD cheese at the register instead of using the free stuff, or better still, choose a Specialty burger instead. Not worth the extra anymore...IMO.

I enjoyed the article and people's comments and suggestions. Thank you all!

I think it's mainly a Washington DC area chain, but I think it's slowly expanding along the East Coast- 5 Guys. More of a diner type place, but it's great and I haven't met anyone who's tried it who doesn't love it!

Thanks for the great run down. I think you really need to try fuddruckers, they have the best burgers I have ever had, Chilis is a close second

I agree.... Cheeburger Cheeburger has the best burgers and a fun atmosphere too. http://cheeburger.com/home2/index.asp

Oh yeah- Cheeseburger in Paradise has a variety of specialty burgers-including the one made famouse by the song- but even their minis are really good. Nice atmosphere here too.

I drive a truck for a living and have eaten hambugers all over the country. The best burger to be had is the Buffalo burger at the "Rock Cafe" on route 66 in Stroud,Oklahoma. It's a one-of-a-kind cafe and if you really like hamburger's stop what you are doing right now and start driving that way.

Have you tried the New York Burger Co. it is on 303 Park Ave (Btwn 23rd & 24th St) in Manhattan. They have a very interesting menu

Five Guys Burgers and Fries is by far the best burger I've ever had. It's a diner atmosphere, but I have never found any burger that can beat it, no matter what the price is.

Here in Indianapolis, we have Hooters and Culvers, both you should try. Personally I think Hooters is the best burger for the dollar

It has been mentioned several times, but after traveling all over the USA, the best burger is at CHEEBURGER CHEEBURGER.

Outback steakhouse. I think its about $8. Best burger I ever had.

The best hamburger on the planet is at any Hard Rock cafe...medium rare...it is heaven on earth...

Cheesburger in Paradise is an excellent place for a burger, So is Chessburger, Cheeseburger. Fudruckers is ok, too greasy.

My husband and I love to eat and we go for the food not for the decor. It does seem that the mom & pop places often beat out the chains and in Northwest Indiana it's kind of difficult to a 4-star restaurant of any kind. I get jealous of the people in Chicago when I see "Check Please" on channel 11. However the list of good places to eat here seems to be slowly growing. As far as hamburgers goes, you may want to try Cracker Barrel? My husband likes their hamburger a lot and the price isn't bad either. As far as sandwiches go, my new favorite is Portillo's! I love the Itailian beef! My husband, who is a hamburger fan, always seems to get the hamburger so you might want to give them a try also. Prices are great too! vickyp

If you want to drive a little stretch, you should visit The Rebel Cafe in Toccoa Georgia. This is a restaurant that has been around for many years and have always been known for the Rebel Burger. It is my choice when I want a burger!

In California we have BJ's resturants that have a pretty good burger. If you have any out your way I would like to see how they Compare to others. Im a big fan of Red Robins 5 alarm burger.
Thanks

If you're in Syracuse, NY check out the Tumbleweed Burger at Empire Brewery...it is unbelieveable! In Rochester, NY MacGregor's has an amazing burger--especially if you get it with brie cheese and bacon. The most amazing burger I have EVER had is in Philadelphia at Monk's Cafe...melt-in-your-mouth yumminess! In terms of chains, you may want to try Cheesecake Factory and Zeb's.

You have got to try" Zebb's" burgers in Mattydale ,NY......different sizes and you can put your own choice of toppings on and as much or little as you choose ! Taste like they are made up FRESH ! Please go try a burger at "Zebbs" ?

You should really try In and Out burger. I think they are only on the west coast but by far one of the best burgers I have eve had.

you should try the burgers at cheddar's bar n grill if there is on in ur area

Just to add, there's Atlas Bar & Grill, and Sante Fe Cattle Company.

My favorite is still Carl's Jr./Hardee's bacon western cheeseburger!

I like the Fuddrucker's suggestion, but the best cheeseburger anywhere can be found at Cheeseburger in Paradise. They have several locations on the East Coast and in the Midwest. The closest to NYC would probably be the one in Secaucus, NJ near I-95 and I-495.

The obvious reason that you've had such mediocre luck with your burgers is because you haven't strayed from the east coast. The greatest burger In the continental United States is In-N-Out burger. Freshness, Quality, and Reliability are all characteristics of this West Coast chain; And I can safely say I have never had a bad meal there, and i'd also like to share my motto with you: West is Best, East is Least.

Thank You.

Don't forget to sample the hamburgers at the beefeaters fast-food Mecca,
Outback Steakhouse. Yum.

I would have to definitely recommend Johnny Rockets. They have the best burgers I have ever eaten!!! I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the diner style restaurant and the service was excellent. :)

You might want to try Max and Erma's, a restaurant that started in Columbus, OH. It is currently all over Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. The closest one to New York City (according to their website www.maxandermas.com) is:

Max & Erma's Restaurant The Oaks
180 B Mill Road
Oaks, PA 19456
