A simple drink featuring Fernet and Campari. [Photograph: Michael Dietsch]

Some drinkers will enjoy this two-ingredient shot's bracing bitterness; others will think of it as Hell's hazing ritual. Me? I love the pants off of it. The Campari's subtle orange flavors pair well with (and somewhat tames) Fernet's minty fist. This drink won't convert anyone who hates either Fernet Branca or Campari, but if you love either or both, you should try this.

Special equipment:
rocks glass, mixing glass, mixing spoon, jigger, cocktail strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces Fernet Branca
  • 1 1/2 ounces Campari

Directions

  1. 1.

Place rocks glass in freezer at least 15 minutes before starting to make cocktail. Fill mixing glass 2/3rds full with ice. Add Fernet and Campari. Stir until drink is well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into chilled rocks glass. Serve.
