This classic drink, published in Hugo Ensslin's 1916 book, Recipes for Mixed Drinks has no gin or whiskey. Instead, dry vermouth is the main ingredient.

Special equipment:
Mixing glass, barspoon, strainer, citrus peeler

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces dry vermouth
  • 1 ounce Benedictine
  • 1/4 ounce absinthe
  • Garnish: orange twist

Directions

  1. 1.

    Fill a mixing glass 2/3 full with ice. Add dry vermouth, Benedictine, and absinthe. Stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds.

  2. 2.

    Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twist and serve.
