Philly Smash

Fresh summer berries are muddled with little simple syrup to enhance their sweetness, then paired with rye whiskey to give the drink a little pep. Averna, a rich-tasting amaro, complements the berries nicely.
This recipe is slightly adapted from a cocktail by Rob Gourlay of Esquire Tavern in San Antonio that was printed in Imbibe.
Note: To make simple syrup, combine 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Cool before using. Simple syrup will keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
