  • 1 cup flour (about 5 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar (about 8 ounces)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cup chopped pecans

  1. 1.

Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a 8- by 8-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt to combine.

  2. 2.

Place butter and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Stir until melted and smooth. Let cool 10 minutes. Whisk in egg. Stir in flour mixture. Stir in vanilla.

  3. 3.

Pour dough into baking pan and smooth evenly with a spatula. Cover top with pecans. Bake until a cake tester comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let cool in pan for 15 minutes then cut into twelve squares.
