Try your homemade Krangostura bitters in this cocktail developed by Tona Palomino and Jafrul Shahin of wd-50 in New York.
Tona says: "It is a short punch, hence the name, and a pretty and tasty little drink. The clove [from the Krangostura] punches through and gives it that great Caribbean feel". It's a little spicy, a little rich, a little tropical, but not oversweet.
Note: Smoky, aromatic Batavia Arrack has a really distinctive flavor—as Paul Clarke says, it's somewhere between Haitian rum and single-malt Scotch. It can be purchased online for around $30. In a pinch, you can substitute a funky Jamaica rum.
