Dinner Tonight: Bacon, Pear, and Cheese Sandwich

Bacon, Pear, and Cheese Sandwich: You know, because sometimes a grilled cheese is just not enough. You deem that what that classic could really use is a bunch of bacon. I mean, when has that ever failed a sandwich before? So how about a few slices of pear to balance it all out, and make you feel a little better about yourself? But only a few.
Instead of feeling like an overstuffed grilled cheese, the sandwich comes out unique and perfectly proportioned. It's like a brand new creation. I have Simply Recipes to thank for this. It may read like a train-wreck, but the result is slightly crunchy and gooey, with a nice bright shot of acidity from the pear to balance it all out. It's perfect as a nice light dinner, or paired with some soup.

Bacon, Pear, and Cheese Sandwich
- serves 2 -
Ingredients
4 slices French or Italian loaf bread
4 slices bacon, cooked
1 Bartlett pear, thinly sliced
2 slices Sharp white or provolone cheese
1 tablespoon butter
Procedure
1. Top two of the slices of bread with a piece of cheese, a few slices of pear, two strips of bacon, and a final slice of bread. Slather some butter on top of each sandwich.
2. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the sandwiches in butter side down. Slather some more butter on top of each. Cook for about a minute or so, or until nicely browned on the bottom. Flip the sandwiches and then place a large iron skillet on top to flatten them. Cook for another minute or so, checking occasionally to make sure they don't burn. Then remove and serve.

Sounds tasty, I imagine apples instead of pear would work well in that too.
My current favorite grilled cheese:
Shallots
Thyme
Gruyere or Comte Cheese
Some sort of crust country bread
1. Caramelize shallots with a few sprigs of thyme, till shallots are soft, discard thyme sprigs.
2. Spread bread slices with shallots top with cheese, butter up the bread and grill in a cast iron pan or panini press.
I like it with a simply dressed arugula salad or soup, or both :)

Be careful when you say "grilled cheese sandwich" around here, it was more than one meaning.

I'm not a big pear fan, but apple/bacon/grilled cheese is one of my favorite all-time sandwiches!

This is a very good sandwich. I just happened to have everything on hand, and the hardest part was deciding which pear to use--I have Anjou, Seckel and Bosc, no Bartlett. I used Anjou. I think I'll do this with split pea soup on Monday.
Thanks, Nick.

This sounds like a brunch dish to me!

The pear part puts me in the mood for almond butter, maple syrup, and pear on whole-wheat english muffin or toast for breakfast. Mmmmm....

Ditto on the apple/bacon/cheese combo - I use spreadable brie, Granny Smiths and add honey mustard on whole grain ciabatta.
