Cakespy: CupShake, a Cupcake Milkshake

Note: Jessie Oleson (aka Cakespy) is a good pal of Serious Eats and an all-around super cool gal. Every Monday she will be chiming in with a delicious dessert recipe.

Cupcakes and ice cream--those twin quasars of deliciousness, those icons of dessert. Is there any way they could possibly get any better?

Yes. By combining and blending them into a buttercreamy dream of a milkshake. At least that's the idea behind CupShakes, a beautiful new collaboration between Utah's The Sweet Tooth Fairy and Sammy's Cafe (an establishment already known for their pie milkshakes).

Now, the official CupShake is comprised of soft serve ice cream and a cupcake mixed with an Electro Freeze machine. Lacking these resources, my homemade version was made by combining a cupcake and an entire ice cream cone in a blender, which seemed to work out just fine. As for flavors, choose your own adventure: carrot cake with caramel ice cream? Funfetti with vanilla? The possibilities are endless.

One thing's for sure: this shake is so rich, so thick, so decadent, it would bring a tear to Paula Deen's eye.

Cupcake Milkshake

- makes 1 milkshake -
Inspired by CupShakes.

Ingredients

1 cupcake
1 2-scoop ice cream cone (sugar or wafer cones are both fine)
1/4 cup heavy cream

Procedure

1. Place cupcake and ice cream cone in blender. Pour 1/4 cup heavy cream directly on top.

2. Blend until fully incorporated. If the shake is thicker than you'd like, add 1/4 cup more heavy cream and blend again, just until incorporated.

3. Serve immediately. If desired, garnish with whipped cream and sprinkles.

This is indeed a Paula Deen special. Welcome to Serious Eats, Jessie. We're really happy to have you.

I'm sorry to say, I think this looks hideous. I cannot imagine ever drinking/eating such a thing - eeeee-yuchhhh. But welcome anyhow!

As a child, I definitely dreamed of a recipe that began: "Place cupcake and ice cream cone in blender. Pour 1/4 cup heavy cream directly on top."

I don't know whether to be excited or clutching my toothache in anticipation!

OMG! I was once a breakfast cook in a nursing home and there was a category of resident we referred to as the "purees" because all their food had to be, yes, pureed. That included cakes, which was really gross.

So yeah, um, enjoy your pureed cupcake. The whipped cream looks good, but I'll pass.

That looks so good.

Ed: Thanks for so politely avoiding the fact that this recipe is basically the antithesis of your Serious Diet and offering such sweet words of welcome!

Dcarl: It is one of those things that skirts the line between awesome and awful--it's true!

Trilby: I can see how those "purees" might turn you off to...well, many sorts of liquid foods! ha!

Doubt I'd actually eat this; this is definitely for those with a SERIOUS sweet tooth which isn't me!

I have a serious sweet tooth, but I like to keep my cake separate from my ice cream. I even eat the icing relatively separate from the cake. I don't know why you'd want to muddle the flavors of a lovely cupcake in a milkshake.

While I still can chew, I intended to continue to do so!

I remember when i was a kid pouring milk on stale cake and eating it like cereal. It was great! Cakespy is awesome!

I love almost everything about it -- I don't know why, the heavy cream part just throws it over the edge. Cupcake, Ice Cream, Cone, and Milk. Now that sounds divine!

Funny you should mention Paula Deen...I believe this is exactly the dessert that the comedianne Kathy Griffin made on her show when she visited with Paula Deen (spent the weekend in Savannah with her - hilarious)....Gosh..I'll probably be beaten just for mentioning that I saw Paula on TV....it was an accident..honest!! (Which is worse, Paula or Kathy? LOL!)

This reminds me of WALL*E. "Try our cupcake in a cup today!"

Genius! I am trying this shake this weekend:)

I say, Why not! I love cake and milk, cake and ice cream and I really love to take my homemade brownies with frosting and have it with ice cream and once in a while I will chop up the brownie and mix it in the ice cream. It is definitely a decadent treat and not meant for everyday. Is this any different than Cookie and Cream ice cream? I do think hand stirring would be better than blending but then that is my personal opinion. To each his own, I guess.

Where I live (central NY) we have Perry's ice cream, which has a wonderful flavor called "piece of cake". It is yellow cake flavored and has hunks of cake and fudgy chocolate frosting in it. So, no need to make this shake. Just buy a half gallon and dig in. (I usually go to the ice cream stand and get a scoop of this kind with a scoop of French Roast Coffee...thus, having coffee and cake) Mmmmmmmmmm!!

When I was 17, I had jaw surgery and my mom had to puree everything so I could at least "eat" with everyone else - so she pureed chinese food with homemade chicken broth, etc.

I would've adored something like this. Sounds like it would've been heaven. Next time I have any cupcakes, I will try this. Sounds sweet and yummy.

Disgusting.

Bleagh! I feel quite ill... bad enough blending cake with icecream, but then adding double cream???? Gross.

That looks horrendous.

I have to admit that I let my curiosity get the better of me and I made one of these last week.

And it was pretty awesome.

Actually, Sonic (the chain restaurant) made a "birthday cake shake" for their 50th birthday in 2003. Theirs was pretty good, though a bit too sweet for me.
