Time for a Drink: Ward Eight

cocktailsWhat with the third debate, Joe the Plumber, and all the heat associated with the closing days of the election, a person could need a drink or two. If that's the case, consider this a campaign-related concoction.

The Ward Eight purportedly dates back more than a century, to a time when politics could be truly bare-knuckle. Rumored to have been created at the Locke-Ober (the second oldest restaurant in Boston) to celebrate the victory of Martin Lomasney's 1898 campaign for a seat representing Boston’s Eighth Ward—a celebration that suitably took place the night before the election—the Ward Eight is a simple twist on a whiskey sour.

Wait, did I say simple? When it comes to politics, nothing is simple, and by incorporating fresh OJ and a little grenadine into the venerable sour, the Ward Eight rises above the ordinary. With more than two weeks left yet until the election, you may want to keep a pitcher of these close at hand.

Ward Eight

Ingredients

2 ounces rye whiskey
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon grenadine*

Procedure

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake well for 10 seconds and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a campaign button.

Author's Note: Rather than relying on artificially flavored and colored substitutes, you can easily make your own grenadine by mixing bottled pomegranate juice with sugar—about two parts sugar to one part juice works well—and whisking over low heat until the sugar is dissolved.
