This week's Cartoon Kitchen features Serious Eats' cartoonist in residence Larry Gonick's spin on an Indonesian vegetable dish. —Ed Levine

Ingredients

  • 1/2 medium onion, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon or lime peel
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Peanut oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Assorted vegetables such as cabbage, beans, carrots

Directions

    Sauté the onion, garlic, coriander, and pinch of cayenne in a little peanut oil. Add the sugar, the peanut butter, a pinch of salt, the milk, 1/2 cup water, and the lemon or lime peel. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring often, for five minutes.

    Briefly parboil a colorful assortment of vegetables: cabbage, beans, carrots, etc. Arrange them on a plate, and chill them in the refrigerator. Serve with the sauce on the side.
