A chocolate sauerkraut cake isn't hugely uncommon in a lot of homes descended from German or Polish roots. I haven't made one or tasted one myself, but it's said that the sauerkraut flavor is undetectable and the texture that the kraut lends to the cake is mistaken for coconut.
Sounds crazy though.
