The classic shooter's sandwich, made with a whole steak and mushrooms pressed into a hollow loaf of bread sounds great on paper, but has some problems in reality. Here are four versions that really work.

Roasted Vegetable and Goat Cheese Shooter's Style Sandwich
To make a shooter's style sandwich, slice off the top of a loaf of hearty bread, then cut around the interior perimeter with a knife. Scoop out the bread with your hand to create a boat to nestle ingredients. Layer in your ingredients, making sure to blot off any extra moisture, press them in firmly, then close off the sandwich. Wrap tightly with aluminum foil or butcher's paper, then place it between two stiff cutting boards and weigh it down with a 40 to 50 pound weight for at least 4 hours and up to overnight. Slice it directly in its wrapping, and serve in wedges.
