America's Best Ice Cream

icecreamusa.jpgForbes Traveler has compiled its list of America's best ice cream. For insight into the current ice cream trends in America, the magazine turns to David Lebovitz, author of The Perfect Scoop, who says he’s seen “an explosion of handcrafted ice cream and gelato places opening up that use fresh, pure ingredients." This is exactly the kind of explosion we like! Ed's already laid out his favorite ice cream "scooperies" in New York, after the jump Forbes' list of best ice cream around the country.

Graeter's?! When Ohio has Jeni's?!

Seriously, Graeter's isn't even close. Jeni's is by far the best, looks like Forbes Traveler didn't do their homework.

I want to elbow my way into this and nominate Sherman Dairy in Michigan for a spot on this list! It's amazing stuff - creamy and so tasty. During blueberry season they make the most amazing blueberry ice cream on the planet.

no chinatown ice cream factory?

I'll always carry a torch for Steve's. Its disappearance has left a hole in my life for years and years.

I barely even eat ice cream any more...

I prefer Graeter's to Jeni's...though I also prefer Denise's to Jeni's. As far as I'm concerned, Jeni's is vastly overrated.

Bluebell Homemade Vanilla. Nothing else needs to be said.

glad to see PA making this list! Capogiro gelato is amazing. closest thing to italy this side of the atlantic. And they are so creative with flavors! Check out their site for a daily list by store.

and i still miss custard beach. the best ice cream i have ever had.

No doubt the best ice cream is the custard you get in Green Bay Wisconsin, cream and oh, so rich.....!

What about Dr. Mike's in CT?

Never heard of Glacier's. Lik's has the best ice cream in Denver, hands down, especially their Jack Daniel's Chocolate Chip.

I'm with nantaylor--any list that leaves out Dr Mike's in Bethel CT cannot be a serious list.

There is a lot of California north of San Francisco.

I really like Vic's on Riverside in Sacramento, it dates back to the 1940's, and still has a lot of original "parts." Burr's on Folsom is owned by a former Vic's employee and uses ice cream from Vic's.

Add me to the raves for Jeni's and Denise's in Columbus, Ohio - I find both far superior to Graeter's.

Oh man, they neglected to include Bubbies Ice Cream in Hawai'i!

Brewsters in Atlanta....must have in the Peach State!

I lived in Texas years ago, and I still pine away for Bluebell icecream. Do they still use that cute jingle? "Bluebell is the best icecrem in the country!"

I'm surprised that Ciao Bella Gelato is on the list. I've never been to an actual location but the pre-packaged stuff in supermarkets is not very much like gelato and about on par in terms of flavor with any other premium ice cream.

While I certainly agree with the nomination of McConnell's in SB (living here, I suppose I'm biased), the best ice cream I've ever had is at Screamin' Mimi's in Sebastopol, CA. Mimi wins award after award...her blod orange sorbet is to die for, and the Cookie Galaxy ice cream is phenomenal (with Oreo bites, graham cracker pieces and another that's eluding me right now...Nutter Butters maybe?). Yum, yum, yum.

The Juice Bar on Nantucket serves up some of the creamiest homemade ice cream ever! The flavors are fantastic and it's always so difficult to make a choice!
I totally agree with the call for adding Brewster's in Atlanta to the list. Even though it's a chain, they are fantastic!
My mouth is watering....perhaps tonight will be an ice-cream night!

Funny story - The guys who own Toscanini's and Rancatore's are brothers. Mr. Rancatore, the older brother, got to keep the name, but their stores are very similar. I'd say Toscanini's has more adventurous flavors, but Ranc's is def a local favorite, too. Locations are in Lexington and Cambridge

Columbus (Ohio - for people not Ohio Hip) - is the ice cream capital of the World.

We have Jeni's, Denise's, Graeters, Handels and more.

Check out the ice cream category on my blog.

And for fans of Ohio Ice Cream -

Graters is good - but Serious Eats needs to do some more reasearch.

I said this before, but I'll say it again: LaSalle Vanilla or Cherry Vanilla is the best ice cream in New York that you buy by the pint. Unfortunately, not too many places carry it. In my neighborhood in Midwood (Ave J) there's just one store that carries it, and even there, I can't find the complete selection of flavors. In my opinion, LaSalle is better than Hagaan Daz.

I was worried that people were going to get the wrong idea about Ohio, but it looks like Jeni's and Denise's are well represented!

I have never been there, but Penn State University has an ice cream shop that is legendairy (ha!).

capogiro is truly bananas. best gelato in the US.

but ciao bella? just okay. and no chintatown ice cream or labratorio di gelato in NYC?

Unassuming, simple, home-made, organic and heavenly delicious Moorenko's in Silver Spring, MD is a hidden gem. Try the white chocolate pistachio and you will discover why. YUM!!

I'll have to try Teo's sometime soon, according to their website they also have the best Espresso in Austin. We'll see!
