Serious Sandwiches: SXSW Sandwich Checklist
Since my "real" job (whatever that means) is in the "music industry" (radio is still part of the music industry, right?), I've always dreamed of going to the SXSW music festival. I've heard great things about Austin, Texas, and my friends and co-workers always have amazing stories of great shows that I am bound to love that take place in a really cool town. But this year, I discovered a new aspect of SXSW that makes me feel jealous about not getting to go: all the serious sandwiches.
Thanks to blogs, Flickr, and most important, the invention of the iPhone, the SXSW food porn has been pouring in since last week—and I have to say, the sandwiches look pretty damn delicious. Using previous years as a guide, you would expect me to be super envious of missing My Morning Jacket tear through their new songs at the Austin Music Hall, or Michael Stipe playing at the all too famous Stubb's. This year, however, I think I'm bummed because I missed out on all the eatin'.
After the jump, my recently created, hipster food porn-based, Austin sandwich checklist.
Not surprisingly, my list—made from the drool inducing photos taken by people descending on the city for music & drinking—is all barbecue. Any Serious Eaters from Austin care to add to (or subtract from) the list? Feel free to have at it in the comments.

I love Rudy's. We finally got one in Houston.

Austin has two BBQ joints with similar names, Ruby's (on Guadalupe at 29th, which seems to be the one you're referring to) and Rudy's. It's easy to understand the confusion, but don't get them confused! Ruby's serves all-natural, free-range Texas beef, raised without hormones or antibiotics. It tends to be lean. They make a fantastic sauce that you can buy in local stores, too! The restaurant has a "blues" theme going. I haven't eaten at Rudy's so can't recommend it but I hear it's more of an assembly-line BBQ joint. Maybe another Austin reader can speak for it.

Go to Azul--they serve some excellent sandwiches. It's pretty far south, possibly on Manchaca.

Joe's on W 2nd has a great pulled pork sandwich. I also love Iron Works at the corner of Caesar Chavez and Red River for any kind of BBQ.
I'm not too fond of Rudy's gas station BBQ, but Ruby's on the drag (address above) is great.

I know I am in the minority, but I do not like the salt lick at all - I dislike the sauce and for me, BBQ is all about sauce.

I agree with you cmckenna. I think the Salt Lick's sauce and thin and flavorless. Also, I don't think their meat is really that well smoked. I think people are more enamored of the experience than the food.

I recently moved to Santa Fe from Austin. I lived there for 4 years while I studied at UT; although I was always more concerned about the great food in town. I made it my business to stake out all the great sandwiches shops. Here are some you need to check out next time your in town that aren't just barbq joints.

Possibly the best whole wheat bread I've tasted, and great chicken salad. They also offer baked goods, and take out meals.

An old grocery store in Hyde Park store that makes deli sandwiches to order. They have a wide selection of desserts, sodas, chips, and candy. They also have basic groceries.

This cajun place popped up some time after Katrina. They produce a pretty serious crawfish po-boy.

A local sandwich chain that's great if you're on a budget. Why bother going to Subway anymore?
