David Little, owner/operator of Barnacle in Seattle, describes Braulio as having juniper-like flavors, plus "minty, warm spices, and hints of chamomile." The amaro is increasingly available in the US these days, thanks to the 2014 acquisition of the brand by Gruppo Campari. Little likes to use it in this spin on a Boulevardier (itself a cousin of the Negroni). Mixed with rye and sweet vermouth, the amaro adds richness and a distinctive herbal, almost menthol-like character to the drink. If you're a fan of whiskey and you like fernet, you'll love this cocktail.

Special equipment:
Mixing glass and cocktail strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce (30ml) sweet vermouth, such as Mancino Rosso or Dolin Rouge
  • 1 ounce (30ml) Braulio Amaro Alpino
  • 1 ounce (30ml) rye
  • 1 dash lemon bitters
  • Lemon twist, for garnish

Directions

  1. 1.

Add sweet vermouth, Braulio, rye, and lemon bitters to a mixing glass and stir with ice until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, garnish with lemon twist, and serve.
