Cukes
Cukes

Niki decided to make cucumber tea sandwiches for afternoon tea. She should probably keep her eye on the mandoline, though.

Studying Chocolate

As Max begins testing some chocolate dip techniques for frozen desserts (recipes coming soon!), Leang and Daniel consider the challenges.

Every kid's dream.

Hurry, it's melting!

Hot office + ice cream breakfast = watch out for drips!

Pasta party!

Daniel's working on a pasta sauce recipe. Jamie, Jim, and Ben were happy to chow down on the results.

Got buns?
Got buns?

Working near Chinatown has its benefits. Jamie, Leang, Daniel, and Max divvy up an assortment of fluffy steamed buns.

We got buns.

These steamed buns are a great way to feed the office on the cheap.

Gotcha!

Max took his camera out to document me documenting a taste test and I snapped this shot of him.

There I am!

This is most likely how I will appear in most photos you will see of me.

Jim, Leandra, Leang, Ben, and Jamie dig in to the leftovers from a research session on bagels and the cost of cream cheese.

Stella!
Stella!

Kenji is driving all the way to California over the next few weeks. He stopped by Lexington, KY for a night and stayed with Stella, A.K.A. BraveTart. Just in case you were wondering how she’s been, the answer is totally fantastic and up to her neck in pies.

House of Bravetart
House of Bravetart

Kenji and his wife enjoyed the morning with the dogs in Stella’s awesome childhood house. IT’S SO BIG AND BEAUTIFUL AND COVERED IN GRASSES AND FILLED WITH PIES AND BOURBON AND DOGGIES.

Mine.

Despite the fact that there are already at least a few other dogs who claim to this porch as their own, Hambone does his best to look like a ruler.

Yuba goes country
Yuba goes country

Next stop: Kenji’s cousin’s farm in Tennessee. Yuba met her first sheep and her first pheasants and her first chickens and she still looks as goofy and unfazed as ever.

Step away from the sheep.

This is Dora, a five month old Great Pyrenees who’s being trained to be a sheep dog—there are lots of coyotes in the area! Here she's barking to let Kenji know that he shouldn’t get any closer to her flock.

Why can’t I be a sheep-dog too?, Jamón asks himself.

'Welcome to our Dining Room'
'Welcome to our Dining Room'

Kenji and his wife stopped by the Loveless Cafe, a Nashville institution that while kitschy and packed with tourists, still makes a mean never-ending pile of biscuits.

A light breakfast

This country fried steak with sunny side up eggs, cheesy hash browns, and cream gravy was just the start to a a truly epic day of eating through Nashville and St. Louis.

How did they get it so crispy??

Holy crap this is the crispiest crunchiest laciest-edgiest burger ever, says Kenji. It’s from Carl’s Drive-In, a fantastic old-school griddled burger spot in St. Louis. Stay tuned for a full report of Kenji’s cross-country eating adventures.

Today we said farewell to our managing editor Jamie with a table full of dim sum at Jim Fong.

Would anyone like another bun?
Would anyone like another bun?

After dim sum, we were craving something sweet, so we stopped into Jamie's favorite local bakery Fay Da for some taro buns, taro puffs, cream buns, lotus puffs, and pineapple buns.

Ba-a-a-a-a-a-ye Jamie!

When it comes to cards, bigger is better. We'll miss you, Jamie!
