Our journey to this story began with a phone call to Steve Sando, of Rancho Gordo. A few minutes into our chat, he told us about a rural community in Hidalgo, Mexico that was growing beautiful oregano in an effort to maintain the life and vibrancy of the surrounding community. We were sold.
A five-hour bus ride and a truck ride up slippery mountain slopes brought us to the astoundingly beautiful farms of the CAXTLE Oregano Collective. There, we were treated to barbacoa, a tour of the farms, and inspiring words from the founder about his dream not to sneak into the US, but to walk proudly through its front door.
