Cereal Eats: New MultiGrain Cheerios Dark Chocolate Crunch

Multigrain Cheerios are one of my all time favorite cereals. I can sum up my feelings toward this cereal with the following phrase: MULTIGRAIN CHEERIOS ARE MY JAM. I love this cereal with a deep passion. Absolutely a Top 5 cereal.

Growing up, we were occasionally allowed to have Multigrain Cheerios in the house, but only very rarely. My mom may have been momentarily fooled by the phrase "multi-grain" and thought this was a tasteless health-food variety. I don't know if it's the colors—various appealing shades of brown, tan, and corn-like yellow—or the slight glaze on the O's that gives them that extra crunch, but the magicians who developed this cereal certainly did something right.

I've tried two different new varieties of MGC's over the past year: Dulce de Leche (ick) and Peanut Butter (delish). I personally feel that MGC's need nothing added or taken away whatsoever—it's a nearl-perfect cereal as is. That said, I wasn't mad when I happened upon the new Multi Grain Cheerios Dark Chocolate Crunch.

I've been on a chocolate cereal kick recently, what with Special K Chocolatey Delight Cereal and HBO Morning Energy Chocolatey Almond Crunch—disappointing and tasty, respectively. It's a little difficult to judge: you can't really compare these cereals to a Puffs or a Pebbles or a Krispies. So where does MultiGrain Cheerios Dark Chocolate Crunch fit in?

I like this cereal a lot. I don't know if I can use the word love, because honestly, I can't betray regular MGC that way, but the chocolate Cheerios are a welcome addition. Even better are the little clusters, which taste like they're coated in Nesquik powder—a very good thing in my book. The cereal turns the milk a very respectable chocolate shade, but you don't get that gross leftover feeling in your mouth, a la some of the more sugary cereals out there. My only complaint is that there appears to be an extra coating of sweetness on all of the Cheerios (more than the usual delicate glaze), which my sweet, pure MCG's don't need. But I suppose I get it: there's chocolate in the title—the people are expecting a little more sweetness. This is the most successful MCG variety thus far, and I would even rate this one of the top Cheerios varieties out there.

A side note, why are cereal names SO long these days? What happened to the simplicity of Lucky Charms, Special K, Frosted Flakes? These darn kids and their crazy newfangled names...
