Welcome, Mr. Bear!
The Serious Eats family gained many new members this year (hello Jamie, Niki, Jim, and Jen 2!) to make up for the ones who had moved on (goodbye Alaina, Carey, Erin, and Jen, sniffle), but Mr. Bear is notable for being the most awkwardly bulky, most huggable, and least productive new member. Back in February, Carey won him in a JetBlue contest and Mr. Bear continues to live in our office after Carey left. Admittedly, he hasn't really been the same since...
Mr. Bear, Boozin'
Sometimes we find him clutching a bottle while passed out in a corner.
Mr. Bear, Still Boozin'
Sometimes we find him naked in the shower. :C
Mr. Bear, Dog Pillow
Hambone seemed to appreciate Mr. Bear the most. Or at least his crotch.
The Serious Eats Team
Not sure who's who at Serious Eats? Here's the main team (sans Niki)!
Every time Hambone and Yuba squeezed into the same bed was a good moment.
More Snuggle Time
Well, maybe not "snuggle time" as much as "Yuba doesn't care that Hambone is in her way" time.
Whenever we celebrate a birthday in the office, we try to treat the birthday boy/girl with something unique. Leandra's reaction to these ice cream sandwiches made of City Bakery's pretzel croissant and Jeni's pistachio ice cream was probably the most excited birthday reaction of the year.
Uh, They're Birthday Sticks. They're All the Rage.
Sure, we could've stuck birthday candles into Jim's birthday steamed buns, but aren't burning sticks more memorable?
...Yeah, we ran out of birthday candles.
Fudgie the Whale
We wanted to get Kenji a Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake for his birthday last year (he wanted it, sort of), but due to Hurricane Sandy we didn't get to celebrate his Halloween birthday. This year we finally fulfilled his birthday wish. And...the cake wasn't very good, but we're very forgiving when it comes to happy whale-shaped cakes.
Happy Birthday, Slice!
Of course, the first thing we do with a picnic basket in the office is see if Yuba fits in it.
Hambone slept a lot this year. Yup, he has a good life.
Will's Ugli Buddha's Pardisi-cello
We love it when former interns come back to visit. Sometimes they spoil us, like when Will (SE intern class of summer 2012) came by with a bottle of homemade "Ugli Buddha's Pardisi-cello," a limoncello-esque infusion he made with ugli fruit, buddha's hand, and grapefruit. Bonus: a hand-drawn label!
Banh Mi "Hacks"
That time we stuffed all kinds of non-Vietnamese foods into banh mi was glorious. Read about all the "hacks" here!
Unhappy Banh Mi
If this sandwich could feel, it might have felt like this.
It's always a treat when Yuba looks happy. She usually looks confused, scared, or indifferent.
There's also this classic Yuba face. Happy? Confused? Relaxed? All of the above?
Anchovy Taste Test
Niki was much, much happier when she held her anchovy taste test. A taste test that we shall never forget.
Jamie, Destroyer of Ham
Hambone Wants Something
This might be Hambone's most hypnotic facial expression.
This is what happens if you smush Hambone's face.
New Light Box
We got a new light box, woo! We probably should've gotten one earlier. Here's Kenji
emerging from the birth canal setting it up.
Chinatown Tour With Fuchsia Dunlop
Milk That Goat
Press trips give us all kinds of opportunities we wouldn't get otherwise. Like when Niki visited southern Colorado and milked a goat for her very first time.
Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies S'more
I'm not a huge fan of regular s'mores. But I am a huge fan of s'mores made with giant chocolate chip cookies from City Bakery, just one of 10 s'mores variations Kenji made.
An image to keep in mind next time you make s'mores.
"Lady and the Tramp"-ed
When you have spaghetti and two dogs, you have to give this a go. Alas, it doesn't work quite as well as it does in the movies.
Porchetta, Mozzarella, and Parmesan
Buffalo Chicken Dip
The days we spent taste testing buffalo chicken dip were very good days, indeed.
Leftover prime-grade rib steak is one of the best snacks.
Yuba at Work
Smash those keys, Yuba!
That Time Harold and Kenji Went Fishing
Special Cheese Delivery
That Time We Ate Too Many Doughnuts From Peter Pan
Hoosier Mama Pies
Tug, Yuba, tug!
How much mayo and potato salad can one stand? We found out during our mayo taste test.
Baguette Taste Test
Our search for New York City's best baguette was our most intense taste test of the year, involving 27 different baguettes (two of each) from all over the city.
Sweet Potato Hash and Sticky Buns
Too Many Pastries
Economy Candy Day
Everyone, Dig Into the Candy Dip!
This year, we learned what seven layers of molten candy bars tastes like. ....Very...very...sweet. We don't recommend it.
Yvonne and María, Happy Book Mamas
Boy, Yuba and Hambone sure loved being dressed up for Halloween! Look at those joyful faces. Yes.
STUFFING WAFFLES OMG
Yuba's legs are fun to play with.
Introducing Ed to QWOP
2013 Serious Eats Cookie Swap
Our annual cookie swap is our biggest party of the year. This year we snacked on 46 kinds of cookies spread across six tables.
Shuffleboard Holiday Party
Congratulations, you made it to the end of the slideshow! Take a nap, like these sleepy figs.
