Welcome, Mr. Bear!
Welcome, Mr. Bear!

The Serious Eats family gained many new members this year (hello Jamie, Niki, Jim, and Jen 2!) to make up for the ones who had moved on (goodbye Alaina, Carey, Erin, and Jen, sniffle), but Mr. Bear is notable for being the most awkwardly bulky, most huggable, and least productive new member. Back in February, Carey won him in a JetBlue contest and Mr. Bear continues to live in our office after Carey left. Admittedly, he hasn't really been the same since...

Mr. Bear, Boozin'

Sometimes we find him clutching a bottle while passed out in a corner.

Mr. Bear, Still Boozin'

Sometimes we find him naked in the shower. :C

Hambone seemed to appreciate Mr. Bear the most. Or at least his crotch.

In August we welcomed a new baby to the Serious Eats family! Here's proud papa Nick and his newborn daughter, Mira, checking in during a weekly editorial meeting.

Snuggle Time
Snuggle Time

Every time Hambone and Yuba squeezed into the same bed was a good moment.

More Snuggle Time
More Snuggle Time

Well, maybe not "snuggle time" as much as "Yuba doesn't care that Hambone is in her way" time.

EXCITED LEANDRA
EXCITED LEANDRA

Whenever we celebrate a birthday in the office, we try to treat the birthday boy/girl with something unique. Leandra's reaction to these ice cream sandwiches made of City Bakery's pretzel croissant and Jeni's pistachio ice cream was probably the most excited birthday reaction of the year.

Uh, They're Birthday Sticks. They're All the Rage.
Uh, They're Birthday Sticks. They're All the Rage.

Sure, we could've stuck birthday candles into Jim's birthday steamed buns, but aren't burning sticks more memorable?

...Yeah, we ran out of birthday candles.

Fudgie the Whale
Fudgie the Whale

We wanted to get Kenji a Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake for his birthday last year (he wanted it, sort of), but due to Hurricane Sandy we didn't get to celebrate his Halloween birthday. This year we finally fulfilled his birthday wish. And...the cake wasn't very good, but we're very forgiving when it comes to happy whale-shaped cakes.

Happy Birthday, Slice!
Happy Birthday, Slice!

We celebrate coworkers' birthdays, but not websites' birthdays. ...Unless it's a big one, like Slice's 10th birthday! We honored our pizza blog with a Sicilian pie from Prince St. Pizza.

Basket Yuba
Basket Yuba

Of course, the first thing we do with a picnic basket in the office is see if Yuba fits in it.

Sleepy Hambone
Sleepy Hambone

Hambone slept a lot this year. Yup, he has a good life.

Will's Ugli Buddha's Pardisi-cello
Will's Ugli Buddha's Pardisi-cello

We love it when former interns come back to visit. Sometimes they spoil us, like when Will (SE intern class of summer 2012) came by with a bottle of homemade "Ugli Buddha's Pardisi-cello," a limoncello-esque infusion he made with ugli fruit, buddha's hand, and grapefruit. Bonus: a hand-drawn label!

Banh Mi
Banh Mi "Hacks"

That time we stuffed all kinds of non-Vietnamese foods into banh mi was glorious. Read about all the "hacks" here!

Unhappy Banh Mi

If this sandwich could feel, it might have felt like this.

Happy Yuba
Happy Yuba

It's always a treat when Yuba looks happy. She usually looks confused, scared, or indifferent.

More Yuba

There's also this classic Yuba face. Happy? Confused? Relaxed? All of the above?

Sad Niki, Sad Pizza
Sad Niki, Sad Pizza

Why is Niki so sad? Because she had to taste frozen vegan "cheeze" pizzas.

Anchovy Taste Test
Anchovy Taste Test

Niki was much, much happier when she held her anchovy taste test. A taste test that we shall never forget.

Jamie, Destroyer of Ham
Jamie, Destroyer of Ham

Few things excite Jamie as much as ham. After our ham taste test, she became Serious Eats' official Destroyer of Ham.

Hambone Wants Something

This might be Hambone's most hypnotic facial expression.

TOO SMUSH

This is what happens if you smush Hambone's face.

New Light Box
New Light Box

We got a new light box, woo! We probably should've gotten one earlier. Here's Kenji emerging from the birth canal setting it up.

Chinatown Tour With Fuchsia Dunlop

The coolest part (pun not intended) of Jessica's press trip to Sweden may have been when she took a dog sled ride.

Milk That Goat
Milk That Goat

Press trips give us all kinds of opportunities we wouldn't get otherwise. Like when Niki visited southern Colorado and milked a goat for her very first time.

Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies S'more
Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies S'more

I'm not a huge fan of regular s'mores. But I am a huge fan of s'mores made with giant chocolate chip cookies from City Bakery, just one of 10 s'mores variations Kenji made.

Scared Marshmallows

An image to keep in mind next time you make s'mores.

"Lady and the Tramp"-ed

When you have spaghetti and two dogs, you have to give this a go. Alas, it doesn't work quite as well as it does in the movies.

Porchetta, Mozzarella, and Parmesan
Porchetta, Mozzarella, and Parmesan

Working across the street Di Palo means occasionally treating ourselves to their fantastic porchetta, fresh mozzarella, and Parmesan. Yup, we're damn lucky.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

The days we spent taste testing buffalo chicken dip were very good days, indeed.

That Time Harold and Kenji Went Fishing
That Time Harold and Kenji Went Fishing

After Harold Dieterle and Kenji returned from a day of fishing in the Long Island Sound with a 17-pound striped bass in tow, the whole office was like, "Ooooh." After they broke it down and prepared three dishes with it, the whole office was like, "OMG YES, FOOD, GIMME."

Special Cheese Delivery
Special Cheese Delivery

In an office where we get so many "meh" food packages, this special delivery of Wake Robin Farm cheeses from longtime Serious Eats/Slice community member Diana Horst, aka dhorst, made us super happy.

That Time We Ate Too Many Doughnuts From Peter Pan
That Time We Ate Too Many Doughnuts From Peter Pan

"Hey, let's try every flavor of doughnut from Peter Pan Donut!" sounded like a great idea, until we actually tried it. We emerged defeated and a bit ill.

Giant Whoopie Pie

What's summer intern Sam holding? Just a six-pound whoopie pie. Yeah.

Hoosier Mama Pies
Hoosier Mama Pies

No other pie disappears as quickly in this office as a Hoosier Mama Pie. Thank god Jamie brought some back for us from Chicago.

How much mayo and potato salad can one stand? We found out during our mayo taste test.

Baguette Taste Test
Baguette Taste Test

Our search for New York City's best baguette was our most intense taste test of the year, involving 27 different baguettes (two of each) from all over the city.

Sweet Potato Hash and Sticky Buns

When the powers of Kenji and Bravetart combine, you get a most awesome breakfast of Kenji's sweet potato hash and Bravetart's crazy-sticky sticky buns.

Too Many Pastries
Too Many Pastries

Summer intern Ida wanted to find the best bakery in Chinatown; we said, "Go for it!" And thus she spent many days surrounded by bags of pastries.

Economy Candy Day
Economy Candy Day

File under "why didn't we do this sooner?" We've loved Economy Candy for years, but we only wrote a big-ass post about it this year. Here's fall intern Eric having his mind blown during our visit.

Everyone, Dig Into the Candy Dip!
Everyone, Dig Into the Candy Dip!

This year, we learned what seven layers of molten candy bars tastes like. ....Very...very...sweet. We don't recommend it.

Yvonne and María, Happy Book Mamas
Yvonne and María, Happy Book Mamas

Our contributors Yvonne Ruperti and María del Mar Sacasa released new recipe books this year! To celebrate, we held a party for them at SEHQ involving much dessert and booze for over 60 guests. Check out Yvonne's One Bowl Baking and María's Winter Cocktails.

Boy, Yuba and Hambone sure loved being dressed up for Halloween! Look at those joyful faces. Yes.

STUFFING WAFFLES OMG

Most exciting thing Kenji made in the office this year: STUFFING WAFFLES. TOPPED WITH GRAVY AND MAPLE SYRUP. OMG. The whole office went a bit apesh*t over 'em.

Every year we do something different for our end-of-the-year holiday party. This year we had an awesome celebration with shuffleboard, beer, and barbecue (from nearby Dinosaur Bar-B-Que) at The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Gowanus. Look at Ed go!
