I was surprised when former fried foodie Bill Clinton went vegan, but Al Gore, not so much. The irony of this piece is that I wouldn't call the Washington Post picking up on your eating habits "little fanfare" (and I'm sure it will stir all kinds of opinions regarding the vegan debate). Personally, I think everyone should just eat how they want. The Soho cheese shop is maintaining its wholesale business and even had seven more years on its retail store lease, but Vincent Campanelli, brother of owner Anthony, remarked that "our clientele disappeared." In a very funny post on the GQ website Alan Richman tries to make a few Julia Child vegetable recipes (Carottes a la Concierge and Epinards en Surprise among others) and discovers that vegetables were not Julia's strong suit. He even enlisted the aid of my friend, neighbor and excellent home cook Cathy Loup, who also concluded that she would not be making any of the Julia Child vegetable recipes she tried for Thanksgiving or any time for that matter. Me, I'm making Kenji's roasted brussels sprouts with shallots and balsamic vinegar unless I get up the nerve to make one of his insanely delicious-sounding fried brussels sprouts dishes. —Ed Levine, SE Overlord
