Purrfect Bistro Receives Five Out of Five Paws
Note: The following is written by Serious Eats' resident staff cat critic.
It's been a long summer. During these endless, humid hours, I find myself restless and irritable—truly, these must be the dog days.
Summer has also brought a lot of bland, disappointing fare. Images of fresh caught seafood at a beach vacation dissolve into rude awakenings of watery salmon and mushy tuna. Can after can is cracked open to reveal uninspiring meals that blend together from day to catnap to night.
I don't expect much out of August, but found myself face to face with Merrick's Purrfect Bistro late one night. That's when everything changed.
Tuna Pâté was first; it jiggled slightly, with the lively dance of a fresh fish that made my heart leap with hope. The flavors that followed took me back down to the seashore, and I swooned over each rich, fishy bite.
Next was an intermezzo of something called Cowboy Cookout, in which beef is expertly melded with carrots and peas and a sweet-sour pop of something familiar, something that tasted of holidays and warmth and a bit of sadness. Cranberries.
My main course was the Beef Wellington, billed as "real deboned meat." I sank my tiny fangs in to satisfying, juicy chunks of plump, very "real" beef. Indeed. Cooked to perfection, this hearty dish filled my mouth, belly and soul with pure purring pleasure.
My meal ended in the delicious comfort of Grammy's house— with Grammy's Pot Pie to be exact. Succulent shredded chicken is enhanced with an orange fantasy of carrots and sweet potatoes—and once again—cranberries. They haunt me more deeply than a roving ball of yarn.
With high-quality ingredients, Merrick's Purrfect Bistro delivers: on flavor and on satisfaction. Boasting 21 recipes featuring chicken, salmon, tuna, beef duck and turkey, Merrick's Purrfect Bistro has earned five out of five paws.
