Cereal Eats: Breaking News, Discontinued Monster Cereals are Back!
Very exciting new, cereal lovers! We're talking about a combination of two of my most favorite cereal topics: monster cereals and discontinued cereals. Let's start with the facts: every year, for a few short weeks around Halloween, Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Frankenberry are released onto grocery shelves nationwide. These monster cereals have a huge following. I would venture so far as to say that Count Chocula is arguably the best chocolate cereal of all time. However! This year, two new, or should I say old monsters join the pack. The discontinued Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute are back!
Bringing discontinued cereals back is such a magical concept to me. The fact that it's part of the limited-time monsters crew adds even more thrill. Now the question remains: How do these old-new monsters stack up?
First, a review. As I've already said, Count Chocolate is an incredible cereal. Boo Berry and Frankenberry each have their respective fan bases, though in my opinion they taste pretty similar. I'm guessing the preference is for color (and oh, those vibrant colors!). I will note once again that, while some think he is cute, I do NOT like the looks of this Boo Berry character. I don't trust a man with a shelf of unsegmented teeth.
Now, onto Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute!
Frute Brute is described as a cherry flavored frosted cereal with marshmallows. There's definitely a big hit of "cherry candy flavor" up in here. Not my favorite, but I appreciate the unique qualities, and bright colors. This cereal was introduced in 1974 and discontinued in long-ago 1982. Fun Fact: Frute Brute appeared in two Tarantino films, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
Yummy Mummy is defined as orange cream flavored frosted cereal with marshmallows. It was introduced in 1987 and quickly continued in 1990. I cannot comprehend why this would be. Folks, you have GOT to try this one. I'm not really a fan of Creamsicles and I definitely have no patience for orange-flavored candy, but there is a sweet, marmalade-like flavor to this sunset-hued cereal and I cannot stop eating it. I'm always lamenting the fact that cereal-makers use the same flavors and fail to capitalize on maple or coffee, etc. Well, bravo to General Mills for this delicious orange flavored cereal. It is just crazy enough to work.
Monster pro-tip: try a mixed handful of Count Chocula and Fruity Yummy Mummy. All five monsters will be available nationwide mid-September - October. Retro boxes will be available exclusively at Target.
Anyone else super pumped about the return of Frute Brute or Yummy Mummy?
