In the heart of grilling and barbecue season, side dishes can often become an afterthought. Well, here's a recipe that amounts to more than just a hill of beans. Based on Alton Brown's Barbecue Beans recipe, it starts with dried navy beans that get simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce until completely tender (you can do them on the grill or in the oven if you'd like). They take half a day of slow smoking to reach tender perfection, but the deep, rich flavors you get are worth every second of waiting. Also, they've got a full pound of bacon in them—these beans don't mess around.
