In this great nation of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
The Salty Sweet ($6) at Seventh Tea Bar proves that big flavors sometimes come in small, pretty packages. With its marbled pumpernickel roll from OC Baking Co., this pint-sized tea sandwich looks unassuming, but each ingredient is specifically calibrated to maximize the overall effect. There's fresh ricotta, sweet apricot jam, and salty pistachio pesto, along with the finishing touches: cracked black pepper and a fine drizzle of wild flower honey. The fillings combine to form one, cohesive texture that's salty, sweet, milky, and slightly citrusy.
While the fillings are creamy and smooth, the pumpernickel roll is sturdy and chewy, making the sandwich more filling than it appears. On the side, you also get a salad of mixed greens tossed with a touch of lemon dressing that's so bright and refreshing, it threatens to steal focus away from the sandwich. Add a glass of Limoncello iced tea and you're golden.
