Cereal Eats: I Need To Talk About Froot Loops

Yes, that's right, I need to talk about Froot Loops because I fear that if I don't, no one else will. I'm sure I've lost most of you at this point. You've wrinkled your noses and said to yourself "Yuck, too sweet," and moved onto reading about some kale salad recipe. But for those of you that just merrily read this post or maybe this one , stick around for a brief spell, won't you?

I'm going to once again take you back to my childhood, and a cereal named Fruit-E-O's by New Morning. During my very early cereal years, our cabinets were always stocked with Fruit-E-O's and its oatier counterpart, Oatios. Though many horrifying items in our cabinet were "sweetened with fruit juice" (I still have nightmares about Frookies), Fruit-E-O's were actually pretty decent. I remember loving the lightly colored O's as a kid...or I did, until I met Froot Loops.

It must have been a warm vacation night someplace, and in the kitchenette of a hotel there sat Toucan Sam, nestled in a mini variety pack. He beckoned me with loops of colors I had never known before. Since that meeting, I've been introduced to a multitude of colorful delights: Trix (old version with fruit shapes, please!), Fruity Pebbles and the subtly delicious Fruity Cheerios, but nothing has captured me like that bright prism of colors and first sugar-crusted bite of the 'Loops.

What I love so much about Froot Loops is that it's so unabashedly a sugary cereal. There is absolutely no pretense here. This cereal's hues are straight from the crayon box, shrouded by a thick, white coat of sugary goodness. That crusty armor meets its match in the bowl, where milk melts away the surface and turns the Loops pleasantly soft, yet not quite soggy. You're left with a milk so sweet that only the most hardcore sweet cereal fans can lap it up. I count myself among that dwindling band.
