Happy birthday, Yuba!
Happy birthday, Yuba!

Kenji: Yuba was adopted and her true birthday and age are unknown, so my wife and I picked April 1 and the random age of 7. That way, when we sing happy birthday to her and her little snaggle-toothed face gets all wide-eyed with joy and her quirky snarl seems to ask, "Is it really my birthday today?!?" we can respond, "Nope, not really. April Fools!"

"Also, you're adopted."

(We give her bacon anyway.)

For Alaina's last day we took her out for farewell cupcakes and beer. Her son Malcom (aka cutest child alive) joined up.

Ed with Danny Bowien

Ed and Kenji headed over to the annual Food and Wine Best New Chef gala on Tuesday night and bumped into some new and former winners. Here's Ed with Danny Bowien, a first time winner, and chef at Mission Chinese Food.

Gail Simmons is one of Ed's oldest friends. And damn, if that ain't a winning smile!

He's not a winner (yet), but if we were the type to bet, we'd wager that Ivan Orkin's soon-to-be-opened ramen joint will earn him a spot in the lineup next year.

Hooni Kim, White Castle lover
Hooni Kim, White Castle lover

Kenji headed over to Hanjan this week to check out their late night ramen. Turns out that on the night he was there, Chef Hooni Kim was so ecstatic with his (well-deserved) two star New York Times review that he brought in a case of 100 White Castle sliders and passed them out to all of the guests and staff at the restaurant. Incidentally, did you know that White Castle was chef Kim's inspiration for opening his first restaurant Danji?

Pizza tattoo
Pizza tattoo

Intern Lily unveiled a new tattoo on her arm: PIZZA SLICE! Her description:

"I've always wanted a pizza tattoo but never could figure out the right time to do it. Then I went to Di Fara with my pizza-loving friend Danni, whom I hadn't seen in a really long time. We had an amazing pizza experience, and it just finally felt like the perfect time to get it done. I asked her to draw a couple different pizzas, I picked the one I liked the most, then my friend may gave us matching tattoos. I hope my mom never sees this, she's going to kill me."
