Catch of the day
Fresh fish, octopus, beef, and all other kinds of skewers on all of the tables at the market.
Lit only by the lamps on each table, the Forodhani Market is a beacon in the dark in Stone Town.
Surveying the tables.
Ordering a plate
When you order, you tell one of the vendors which fish or meat you want and they'll chop it up and plate it for you after warming everything up on a grill first.
Warmed to order
Everything is warmed on a grill before serving.
One of the Nutella pizza chefs
For some reason, only the vendors selling the Nutella pizzas wore the chefs hats.
The pizzas are filled with meat or fruit and covered in Nutella and then fried in oil in a giant work. It's not a pizza, but it's delicious anyway.
Sugar cane juice
Freshly pressed sugar cane seasoned with lemon and lime.
Fruits and vegetables
One of the produce stalls at the Darajani Market.
Spices, beans, pastas
The road bordering the Darajani Market was lined with these carts selling dried dates.
Grapes, apples, and other fruits being sold on the street.
Carcasses on hooks and stomachs, livers, intestines all for sale.
Heads from freshly butchered cows.
Most of the people shopping at the Darajani market were locals. Tourists were there spectating, but weren't given much attention by vendors.
This room was filled with these woven baskets with hundreds of chickens inside.
Live & dead chickens
Shoppers pick from either live chickens that can then be slaughtered or select from the buckets of dead chickens in the front.
Freshly butchered chickens ready for purchase. Also covered in flies.
