Austin: What to Eat at the SouthBites Food Truck Court at SXSW

Who knew there were any empty lots left in downtown Austin? Over 15 food trucks have taken over the property at the corner of Rainey and Driskill Streets for SXSW. This pop-up food truck court, christened "SouthBites," was curated by Austin star chef Paul Qui. It offers a selection of Austin favorites mixed with out-of-town trucks from as far away as Ohio. There's an eclectic food selection—everything from Vietnamese cuisine to Senegalese food, waffles and ice cream. The perimeter of the lot is lined with trucks with several long tables shaded by a huge tent. You can keep your buzz going by visiting the full bar stocked with beer kegs and liquor.

During the Interactive portion of SXSW, the SouthBites area felt luxurious after shoving through the crowds at parties and events. There was plenty of seating and short lines. After the music portion started, the crowds visibly shifted from tech nerds to indie rock scenesters. The food court is now a madhouse, especially during peak meal times, with up to 45 minute waits for food after placing an order. Word must have spread about the fabulous and affordable food selection.

SouthBites is at open to the public March 8 - 16, 2013 from 11:30am - 2:30am at the corner of Rainey Street and Driskill Street.
