There's a reason eggs and avocados have the same shape, right? It's a subliminal reminder that they taste good together. At La Mie, a bakery and café in Des Moines, this combination makes appearances in salads and omelets, but the place they shine brightest together is the avocado tartine ($6.95), listed on the breakfast side of the menu but available all day.
A toasted slice of house-made country Italian bread is spread with cream cheese, pillowed with sprouts and scattered with red onions that add crunch and bite. And then comes the avocado: a whole half and perfectly ripe, an embarrassment of riches. The over-easy eggs are perched politely next to the toast, but what you want to do is move them on top of the avocado and, yes, give everything a good smash. Eating it may not be a glamorous affair, but it's certainly a tasty one.
La Mie is owned by master bakers, and the care and attention that goes into their delicious breads—the baguettes, loaves of ciabatta and challah, and wheat, rye, and cranberry-walnut breads stacked invitingly in the front windows—is also in their menu, which features sandwiches, salads, soups and more with little twists that set them apart from other bakeries.
