A short drive from the heart of Little Saigon in California, Orange County Poultry and Rotisserie specializes in Vietnamese dishes made with locally sourced, house-butchered chickens. The mom-and-pop takeout also happens to be in the same strip mall as a pho restaurant, doughnut shop, taqueria, 7-11, and doner kebab joint—in southern California, these miracles tend to happen.
Whole hens and roosters can be purchased raw, prompting an enthusiastic conversation with the owner about whether or not you're the type of person who wants to keep the feet, head, and neck. And while you wait for your bird, a Rotisserie Chicken Bánh Mì ($3.65) makes an excellent sample of the stock. Pulled strands of flavorful, slightly chewy roasted chicken (ga roti) accompany the usual bánh mì fillings on a baguette that errs on the side of extra-crunchy. There are certainly better Vietnamese sandwiches in town, but for the sake of good chicken, this one is surely worth sticking your neck out.
