Remember That Time We Made A Cake Train?
Ed had a dream: to make a train of buche de noel cakes. So we made it happen. Here are all the cars lined up before getting snaked together.
Birthday Bagel Breakfast
Happy birthday to Ben, our ad operations administrator! We celebrated with bagels, lox, and cream cheese.
Hambone, Meet Clinton
Or...Don't Meet Clinton
Neither dog seemed very interested in chatting. Oops.
There, There, Hambone
Yup, that's Hambone and Papa Kenji.
The King Lords Over His Domain
Hambone often chillaxes like this in front of Kenji's desk.
Yuba is a champion stretcher.
Serious Eats Pizza Happy Hour
For the Slice Out Hunger event earlier this year, we donated a "Serious Eats Pizza Happy Hour" to the raffle, with proceeds going to City Harvest. The winner got to stop by the Serious Eats office for pizza, beer, and pizza talk! We enjoyed pies from Motorino, from Prince Street Pizza, and Lombardi's.
Sheep's Milk Ice Cream Tasting
We got a shipment of sheep's milk ice creams from Negranti Dairy out in central California. "Mmmm, tastes sheepy." Some flavors were sheepier than others. All of them were quite tasty.
On Monday we held our fourth annual holiday cookie swap, a.k.a, COOKIE BUFFET!
Party Booze Prep
To wash down all those cookies, we made a few potent punches and loads of eggnog.
Just a fraction of the nearly 50 kinds of cookies from our Cookie Swap party.
A Satisfied Eater
Tam's son Alec seems to be really into his cookie.
A Few Cookie Boxes
Malcolm makes everyone smile!
...Except for Hambone, maybe, who was spotted running away from Malcolm.
"Cookie? For Me?"
Hold on, Alec, you're already holding a cookie.
Malcolm, Living the Life
Just roaming around all bug-eyed.
The Dogs and Their Parents
Kenji rubs Hambone as Yuba curls up in Adri's arms.
After our cookie swap we need something less fatty for lunch, so we made a big mess of Chinese greens. We're thinking of starting a new column: A Choy a Day.
Kenji's Dream Sandwiches
"Last night, I woke up in the middle of a dream so vivid I had to immediately write it down, knowing that it may be important in the future. Robyn, Erin, and I were all college students at an engineering school majoring in Sandwich Studies. We were late for class, so we ran off the the right building, which happened to have a sidewalk café underneath, so of course we stopped for sandwiches. Erin ordered the "Mack-San," which was a whole fried mackerel in white toast with lettuce and tomatoes, its fins and skin sticking out the edges. Robyn, on the other hand, ordered a "MiMaMuff," a toasted roll slathered with miso, mayonnaise, and muffonaise, which in my dream made perfect sense. I believe it is muffuletta-flavored mayonnaise, but I woke up before I had the chance to ask. Either way, I will be making muffonaise in the near future."—Kenji
Yuba is back in her favorite hiding spot.
Want Some Steak?
Kenji's been testing out a few techniques for aging steaks at home, a kitchen experiment that Hambone and Yuba seem particularly fascinated with. (P.S. don't hold your breath, none of the techniques have worked so far.)
Holiday Party at Melody Lanes
When Ed knocks down all the pins, he goes into happy dance mode. It's a sight to behold—check it out in animated gif form.
Less Happy Ed
Aaand that's what happens when Ed doesn't knock down all the pins.
Fried Matter Platter
So many other lanes were ordering this huge mixed platter of fried ravioli, mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and drumsticks, and dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets—we couldn't pass it up. We polished it off disturbingly quickly.
Oh My, There's More
And then for some reason we also ordered jalapeño poppers, sweet potato fries, and regular fries with a little tub of cheese sauce to dip 'em in.
You Think You're Happy Now
We weren't quite as happy after we ate everything and realized how much fried stuff we had eaten. But it was fun at the time.
Kenji bit into his fresh-from-the-fryer jalapeño popper too quickly. Result: intense mouth pain, and maybe a few tears.
