Meet and Eat: Paul Yee, Serious Eats Intern
Guilty pleasures? Palace Fried Chicken has these things called munchers which are fried balls of potato, cheese, and jalapeno. Also, I love pigs in a blanket.
Describe your perfect meal. I love going to a restaurant with large groups of friends and ordering half the menu. I just want to try everything.
What food won't you eat? Apple Juice gives me excruciating stomachaches.
What would you like to try but haven't yet? I'd like to see if I can handle the Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House. I love spicy foods even though they make me sweat like a maniac.
Favorite food person? I have a man crush on Paul Qui, the season 9 Top Chef winner. He seems really nice and cool and is an awesome chef. Also, I've been told I look like him.
When did you first realize you were a serious eater? I have been a serious eater as long as I can remember. According to my parents, one of my first loves was canned peaches.
What do your family and friends think of your food obsessions? My parents are the ones who instilled in me a great love for eating. Most of my friends are equally food obsessed. Birds of a feather i guess!
Favorite food sites or blogs? I love Alex and Aki at Ideas In Food. They don't have any recipes, they just muse about new techniques and approaches to familiar ingredients.
Everyone has a go-to person they call for restaurant recommendations. Who's yours? A director I work with goes to a lot of fancy, white tablecloth restaurants. When I'm going out for a celebratory meal, I usually seek out his advice.
And what's the best recommendation he's ever given you? He introduced me to Bohemian on Great Jones, which has my favorite cocktails in the city.
What is your favorite meal of the day and where do you get it? Lunch narrowly beats out dinner as my favorite meal. I don't usually eat breakfast, so I'm always looking forward to my first meal of the day. I'm a big fan of salad bars like the one at City Bakery. I also love tacos and dosas, especially the ones at the Ganesha Temple Canteen.
Do you ever cook? What's the best dish you make? I cook all the time. I love making fresh pastas and stuffed pastas. There's something relaxing about repeating the same action over and over, whether it's kneading, rolling, stuffing, or folding. I also built a smoker out of a trash can, so a few times a year I'll spend a few hours making barbeque brisket or ribs. The neighborhood kids love it!
