Could Cinnamon Chex Be Better than Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
I really don't know how I came to the Chex game so late. To be honest, I'm a little embarrassed. Ok I'm more than a little embarrassed: I'm a disgrace to cereal lovers everywhere. I'm going to have to eat Chex every day for the rest of my life to make up for this.
Don't worry, eventually I will try every single Chex flavor, and tell you all about each. We'll talk about Chex Mix. We'll talk about Muddy Buddies. All in due time. But to begin our exploration of Chex, I have to talk about Cinnamon Chex. Someone has to know. EVERYONE has to know.
Cinnamon Chex is a masterpiece. I have no idea why I didn't know about this. I blame all of you. Just kidding, but not really.
We'll start with texture. Much like other cereals in this same family—Life, Crispix and Barbara's Shredded Spoonfuls—Chex's 3-D shape adds crisp and crunch that any flake, o, nugget, or cluster cereal just can't achieve. The dry experience is marvelous as is the way milk works its way in between the layers.
The cinnamon sugar coating is more like extra sugary Cinnamon Toast Crunch than it is like the spicy, dark Mini Cinnamon Churros. But there are two key differences. First, the coating is far lighter and second, there are plain rice Chex pieces mixed in with the cinnamon ones, cutting the sweetness. Don't get me wrong, this is still a sugary cereal that serves as a treat, but it shows restraint.
The final indicator is its cereal milk. The verdict? Excellent. Sweet cinnamon-y dust is released and swirled into the milk. A decent hit of spice is also perceptible. I love this cereal.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I know we've been together a long time. And I love you, with all my heart. You taught me the true meaning of cinnamon sugar. You sat with me through every meal in college and all that.
Well, remember when we had that talk about Mini Cinnamon Churros? How you were no longer the only cinnamon cereal in town, how my love had to multiple? Well, it's happened again. I hope you understand.
So yes, while there may be room in my heart and on my shelves for all the cinnamon cereals, one of these days we will need to have a great Cinnamon-Off. I will definitely be the winner that day.
Anyone out there as crazy about Cinnamon Chex as I am? What's your favorite cinnamon cereal?
