We Visit the Popeyes Test Kitchen and Try New Menu Items
Popeyes corporate headquarters recently opened its doors for us to visit their test kitchen. They don't normally do this; in fact it was the first time the chain invited food bloggers to tour its facilities. The fried chicken chain is best known for its "bonafide" New Orleans menu, but the headquarters for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is actually in... Atlanta, Georgia.
During the visit, we got to sample the chain's newest menu item, Zatarain's Butterfly Shrimp, hitting all 1,500 Popeyes locations this week. We also got a sneak peek behind the curtain, and sampled a few products that are still in testing mode. Like fried blackberries and cream pie, which we believe should be officially added to the menu.
If you think of Popeyes solely as a chicken chain, loosen that belt a notch and think again. We got to tour one of SE's favorite chains, eat an obscene amount of food, and learn more about the chain's history. Where did the Popeyes (no apostrophe, please) name come from? Not the cartoon sailor man, but the nickname of the lead character in The French Connection.
