Cereal Eats: Kellogg's Cinnamon Pops
Of the many sugary cereal commercials that haunted me as a child, none filled me with a sense of desperate longing more than those for Kellogg's Corn Pops. I remember watching with such an intense jealousy that my 9-year-old mind could barely contain it.
The commercials played on my every weakness, featuring super cool 90's teens swinging into the kitchen without a care in the world, and then demanding Pops from their parents. The only reason why they didn't get them is because the family had run out of Pops, or something along those lines. By the end of commercial they always got the Pops and continued like, shooting hoops or talking on the phone or any number of other cool 90's teen activities.

First off, if I had ever taken that sort of demanding tone with my mother, she would have laughed at me then assigned me three hours of weeding. Second, obviously Pops were never allowed in the house (even though they actually were my dad's favorite cereal growing up, not Smacks as I mistakenly claimed). End of story. Oh how I BURNED with envy at those carefree Pops-eating teens!
Trying Pops for the first time was kind of a letdown. I don't remember exactly when it was, but I do remember finding the soft, misshapen cereal pieces to be strange. The yellow color was a little off-putting. Bottom line: they didn't live up to the hype.
So I wasn't overly hopeful when I heard that a cinnamon version was swirling around in the cerealsphere.
Christine, an awesome friend of Serious Eats, dropped by the office last week and delivered a box of Cinnamon Pops to my desk, picked up on a recent trip to Montreal. Indeed, this cereal is ONLY found in Canada, much like French Toast Crunch and other unknown treasures.
The cereal looks nothing like original Corn Pops, because it is nothing like Original Pops. It's a totally different cereal. Part of what must appeal to Pops lovers is the light crispness that gives way to a soft middle. The cereal gets instantly soggy in milk. But these little guys? Super crisp and crunchy through and through (they will rip your mouth to shreds) and only soften slightly in milk.
I'll cut to the chase: this cereal is DELICIOUS. They are very similar to Mini-Cinnamon Churros, except Cinnamon Pops are less sweet. The cinnamon flavor is truly awesome. I'm forced to move the box away shortly after opening it. So disappointed that this is not on U.S. shelves! Maybe I should try swinging into the U.S. Kellogg offices demanding my Cinnamon Pops...
Has anyone tried these? Canadian readers, you don't know how lucky you are.
