Hot Dog of the Week: NYC Dollar Dog in Midtown

You might have read about Midtown Manhattan's cutthroat pizza price wars on Slice or in The New York Times, but until getting off a Megabus a few weeks ago, I had no idea that hot dogs were also involved.

Walking by a narrow crowded place next to a bootleg handbag emporium on 7th Avenue that's either called Spinelli's Pizza, Gyro II, Pop's Dollar Food Shop—or all of the above—I fought my way through the gaggle of tourists and vagrants to see what this dollar dog was all about.

Along with dollar hot dogs there's also dollar hamburgers, dollar pizza, dollar fries and dollar drinks. Xeroxed signs taped all over pointed me to the special grill and cash register reserved for the dollar items, steering me away from the "first class" customers who were enjoying bigger and better regularly-priced items from a different kitchen.

I grabbed this shot right before the guy yelled at me for taking pictures, surprised to see the dogs grilled instead of dirty water style—good deal for a buck. Skinless, all-beef, and small (I would guess 10 to a pound) Sabrett's dogs. Not the best but again, pretty damn good for a dollar.

The topping selection was your standard New York City options of sauerkraut, mustard, and red onion sauce. The onions as you can see are pretty damn big, more onions than "sauce," falling out of the dog and onto the street and/or my shirt as I took a bite. The bun was right out of the bag, not steamed or toasted or anything, but this is pretty standard for New York street dogs. Not the finest hot dog out there, but it's one of life's greatest little pleasures—walking through New York City dodging cabs, bike messengers and tourists while downing a hot dog in about 30 seconds. For one dollar.
