A Sandwich A Day: The #6 and The #9 at 1058 Hoagie in San Francisco
Is it considered meta for a sandwich shop to have a kind of separate sandwich pop-up? Because that's just what Deli Board is doing with 1058 Hoagie, an all-hoagie pop-up available for pick-up and delivery (watch their Twitter or Facebook for dates). I'll say this—I stopped wondering as soon as I tried them, fittingly, at last week's Giants vs. Phillies game.
First off, these $10 sandwiches are huge. Even huge in comparison to Deli Board's already sizable creations. They are easily enough for two meals or two people, and I'm not saying that in a dainty, "Oh, I just want half!" way. These are serious. And seriously delicious. Also different: there are no substitutions allowed, and they're all served on fresh sesame rolls. They're also not toasted, making them ideal game day food.
The #6 combines thinly-sliced turkey (piled high, Deli Board style), with avocado, sprouts, shh sauce (roasted garlic, onions, and peppers), and bacon cream cheese. I loved how well balanced all of the flavors were—the salty turkey, the richness of the avocado, a touch of fresh crunch from the sprouts, and the spicy kick from the shh sauce. The bacon cream cheese, rather than dominating flavor-wise, lent an added creamy texture and rich taste with a subtle addition of smokey bacon to the mix.
The #9 is the one vegetarian option on the current menu, and combines a swath of garlicky artichoke dip (bursting with whole pieces of briny artichoke hearts), roasted red peppers, crisp green and red peppers, and ample amounts of creamy, impeccably fresh mozzarella. A dose of salty, slightly spicy "dynamite olive salad" (castelvetrano and black olives with pickled vegetables and peppers) added a further kick of flavor. The quality of the mozzarella alone would make this sandwich stellar, but again, the ingredients all acted to balance each other out both texturally and flavor-wise.
The hoagies, no doubt, were winners—but happily for me, the Giants still beat the Phillies.
