Fresh Food on TV: Weekday Edition

NOMTVWith all the channels on broadcast TV and cable and the inevitable episode repeats, it's hard to sort out what's new or worthwhile. Let us sort it out for you so you don't miss anything worth watching. Times may vary with region; check your local listings for exact hour and channels.

Tuesday (May 29)

Chopped: In honor of grilling season, Chopped is presenting a special episode with a classic cookout condiment in each basket and mandatory grill use in each round. If you've ever wondered how yellow mustard, sardines, frozen waffles and open flames (or some combination along those lines) form a dish in 20 minutes, you may want to tune in. 9 p.m. ET, Food Network

United Tastes of America: Host Jeffery Saad scales the country in search of America's most imaginative cakes. There is a definite possibility for a Duff Goldman cameo, so if you're going through Ace of Cakes withdrawal, be sure to check this one out. 10 p.m. ET, Cooking Channel

Wednesday (May 30)

Restaurant: Impossible: Robert Irvine brings his tough love to Pollard's Bar-B-Que, a joint that's been floundering through its transition from takeout window to sit-down restaurant. Tune in to discover the difficulties of running an operation loaded with menu items that take hours upon hours to cook. 10 p.m. ET, Food Network

Good Eats: Man Food: A classic episode from Alton Brown's long-running, recently ended cooking program. Alton takes on traditional sliders (which he calls Mini Man Burgers) and homemade corn dogs (much, much better than the ones from the freezer aisle). 8:30 p.m. ET, Cooking Channel

Thursday (May 31)

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations: A repeat episode, but one of the show's best. Tony checks out some advanced chocolate techniques, tries the country's best tapas and hooks up with Albert Adria at dessert-only spot, Espai Sucre. 6:00 p.m. ET, Travel Channel

Symon's Suppers: It's Steak Night with Iron Chef Michael Symon, and it looks absolutely delicious. I don't know how many home chefs are cooking up aged porterhouses on a regular basis, but Symon will be preparing one under the broiler with a peach and blue cheese salad that seems perfect for summertime. 9:30 p.m. ET, Cooking Channel

Friday (June 1)

Mystery Diners: A 'gotcha' show that's not about cheating spouses, but rather cheating employees. In the follow-up to last week's premiere, the Mystery Diners investigate missing alcohol and late-night waitstaff parties at Big Earl's Greasy Eats. While this may not be quality food programming, the show's concept sounds silly enough to be addicting. 10:00 p.m. ET, Food Network

The Culinary Adventures of Baron Ambrosia: Another silly-looking food show, this time the cross-country travails of Baron Ambrosia, the so-called "Ali G of Food." In this episode, he seeks out P.T. Barnum's tasty treasure in Bridgeport, CT. High concept food shows tend to fall flat, but a good sense of humor and a violet car might make this program worth watching. 10:00 p.m. ET, Cooking Channel
