Sunday night television is just gangbusters right now. First you got Mad Men back a month ago, then Game of Thrones, and now the youngest of the line-up, Girls. I've spent more time reading critiques on each and forming opinions on what I should watch, than actually watching any of them.
We already gave you a menu for the Mad Men premiere, complete with Ambrosia salad and Manhattans. So it's time to talk about the spread for the other two Sunday shows. (Anybody watch both on HBO right after each other?) If you're waiting for recipes inspired by Veep or the Good Wife—sorry, not this week.
Game of Thrones: Seared Duck Breast with Red Wine
My sources tell me that there's a lot of killing happening on GoT right now, not so much eating. But those valiant soldiers need to fortify themselves between all that wild boar-slaying, right? Duck seemed fittingly Medieval, a game meat that's elegant enough for a king. And (the now dead) King Robert Baratheon's horn full of wine? He can spill some into the pan for a thick fig-sweetened sauce.
Game of Thrones: Homebrewed Mead
MEAD. The official drink of GoT, Beowulf, and all Renaissance Faires everywhere. The ancient honey wine is fairly easy to brew at home—just mix the honey, water, and yeast, and wait. Then glug glug glug. Make sure to choose a good honey, and follow the techniques in the link below for the best results.
Girls: Chickpea Sauté with Greek Yogurt
Girls has been called the next Sex and the City .. a more realistic Sex and the City .. the anti-Sex and the City. It's about four ladyfriend millennials who all live in Brooklyn and are dealing with those emerging-into-adulthood issues. Relationship ambiguity, warped body image, AND now her parents are cutting her off financially? What's a twentysomething girl to do?
Buy chickpeas. Keep at least five cans in the cupboard at all times. Instant emotional and edible security. At 89-cents a can, those little garbonzo guys have so much meal potential with some simple dressing up. And if there was a venn diagram in which Circle A was Chickpeas and Circle B was Greek Yogurt, and the middle part was the millennial girl population who supported both, I'm pretty sure—and as a millennial girl, I can speak from plenty of experience—that section would burst.
Chickpeas and Greek yogurt make up about 284% of my diet. Of course that's a lie, especially given this job, but in my mind they do.
Girls: Kale Chips
Pardon me, kale, I left you out of the chickpea and yogurt party! We love you just as much. We worship you above all other leafy greens. Sometimes we overpay for kale chips at the local market, and a little financial advisor voice inside slaps us (voices can slap, right?) and says, shame on you! Kale chips are ridiculously easy to make at home. And they really are.
To make kale chips: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Wash and thoroughly dry kale. Remove the ribs and cut or rip leaves into bite-sized pieces. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle sea salt. Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, about 10 to 15 minutes.
