Weekend Cook and Tell Round Up: $5 and Under
Last week on our Weekend Cook and Tell challenge we asked all of you to nickel and dime your way through the market and come up with ideas for meals costing $5 and Under. Thrifty cooking and shopping ended up not being all that much of a challenge for many of our regular cook-and-tellers who routinely keep their meal budgets under the five dollar mark. All of this budget conscious cooking made for some pretty inspiring low-cost recipe idea. Here's a peek at some of our favorite under $5 dinners.
Though not for the faint of heart, theindolentcook's budget-friendly secret is incorporating offal into meals in place of pricer, more common cuts. Take a look at this Lemon Pepper Soy Ginger Lamb Heart Stir Fry for an idea of what great things can come from fifty cent lamb hearts.
lemonfair's preferred dining on a dime meals revolve around noodles; Italian style with a Lidia Bastianich inspired Spaghetti with Mushrooms and Breadcrumbs and Asian with Linguini with Peanut Sauce topped with cucumbers and scallions if you're feeling fancy.
Always up for a challenge, dbcurrie decided to see if she could make a meal for two for $20 using ingredients sourced from her local Whole Foods, a market not exactly known for its bargain basement pricing. She came up with a very tasty Chicken and Dumplings recipe that rang in at $20.77, a little over budget, but who's counting, right?
A big round of applause to everyone who shared their cost cutting cooking tips for this week's Weekend Cook and Tell challenge. Be sure to head over to Talk and read about next week's challenge: Tea Time.
