In the East Village, Zanzibar Café serves a few important purposes. It's an early morning fuel station for espresso-based drinks on the sidewalk patio, a midday lunch spot, and the bakery case has assuaged many late afternoon/early evening sugar cravings. There are over a dozen options for sandwiches, ranging from curried chicken salad to Mediterranean vegetable, but I struck gold with the turkey and avocado croissant ($9.95).

Roast turkey is piled on a croissant that's smeared with a tangy herbed goat cheese spread. On top, there's fresh slices of avocado, tomato, mixed greens, and red onion. You also get a salad of mixed greens with goat cheese and balsamic dressing on the side. What separates a great croissant sandwich from a forgettable one usually comes down to the croissant itself, and Zanzibar's is stunning. It's softer than most, with a delicate texture, balanced by a deeply intense buttery flavor that's set off by the nippy goat cheese.
