Ramen and Hot Chocolate
Ah, the classics. Just dip the finger in and suck it off.
"Ever since that juice cleanse I've been trying to decrease my water intake," says National Managing Editor Erin Zimmer. "Eating oatmeal straight out of the box gives me crunch , fiber, flavor, and most importantly, that awesomely dry tongue and throat afterwards. I just love it when the inside of my mouth is like a desert. A desert of oats." For the record: she's a steel-cut girl all the way.
Hamburger Helper, in an Untoasted English Muffin Bun
"I don't know why they call this stuff Hamburger Helper," says intern Robert Sobotnik, "It does just fine on its own." Just toss the dry macaroni with the spice powder and a touch of water to bind it all together. Serious Eats Overlord Ed prefers his burgers these days on a straight-from-the-fridge, untoasted English muffin.
Cream of Chicken Soup
Chief Creative Officer J. Kenji Lopez-Alt may be willing to spend time in the kitchen when work calls for it, but in his spare time, he's all business. "I don't have time to heat up an extra can of water to dilute my cream of chicken soup," he says, with more than a hint of ire. "Besides, when you water it down, it's barely creamy at all. More like 'half-and-half of chicken soup,' if you ask me."
Round it Out Into A Full Meal
When he wants to get extra fancy, sometimes he'll sprinkle a little bit of Stove Top stuffing mix on top. "This is for nights when I'm really trying to impress my wife. Like her birthday. When is her birthday again?" he said, before dashing off to check his Google calendar. If you ask us, those seasoned cubes of dried bread have no place going anywhere near a stove top. Straight to the bowl and into our bellies, please!
Serious Eats National Editor Carey jones likes the convenience of Egg Beaters as a quick liquid breakfast on the run. "It's just so much easier to eat if you leave it raw," says Carey. "I especially like the chunks and floaters that the Florentine flavor has. I really appreciate a bit of texture in my morning glass of slime."
"I've always loved the subtle sweetness and intense flavor of Coffee Mates Crème Brûlée flavor," says Drinks Editor Maggie Hoffman. "But who needs all that caffeine? To be honest, I used to drink coffee just so that I could get some Coffee Mate into my diet, so I thought to myself why not cut out the middle man?" Since then, Maggie has started every morning (and late morning and early afternoon and mid-afternoon and just before leaving work) with a nice, lukewarm cup of Coffee Mate. Jury's out on whether she prefers the dairy or non-dairy varieties yet.
