If one were to host a Mad Men-themed get-together, chances are it would be a cocktail party rather than a sit-down dinner affair. And along with all of those Old Fashioneds, gimlets, and martinis, it's likely that instead of chips and dips or a cheese plate, snacks would come in the form of canapés. The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook is a wonderful source for all sorts of cocktail snacks of yore including these Shrimp Curry Butter Canapés.
While we're not certain that a canapé must begin with Melba toast, it certainly does seem to play a major role. In this recipe crisp little rounds are spread with an exotic-for-the-time curry and coriander spiked butter, and topped with sweet poached shrimp. Although it's a recipe adapted from The Playboy Gourmet circa 1961 there's something about this particular canapé that tastes quite current and even kind of exciting, minus the Melba toast, of course.
