A Sandwich a Day: Giardina at Paesano's in Philadelphia, PA

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the world. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. --The Mgmt.

We abide by Philly's status as a mecca for sandwich lovers. One visit to Paesano's is proof that the title goes above and beyond the cheesesteak.

The Giardina ($8)—one of two vegetarian options on the menu—matches hearty, tender slices of roasted eggplant with equal parts fresh mozzarella. Both are dressed in a bold basil pesto, layered with roasted peppers, garnished with fennel and caramelized onions, and served on Paesano's brilliantly crusty Italian bread. Flavorful and filling without dropping a grease bomb, this is a Philly sandwich at the top of its game.
