I'd never spent any time in the area next to the UCSF Medical Center, and probably never would have if I hadn't been on my way home from the California Academy of Sciences, where I'd spent a lovely afternoon ogling Leafy Seahorses. It's a quiet, almost suburban stretch of streets nestled between Golden Gate Park, Inner Sunset, and Cole Valley. Luckily I got hungry, and pulled off the main road to find Wooly Pig Cafe.

This quiet cafe was filled with medical students and their textbooks, so I was surprised to eat one of the best veggie sandwiches I've had in San Francisco. The Vegi ($6) is made up of organic roasted beets, French beans, spring lettuces, and goat cheese. The beets make up the bulk of the sandwich, so, to state the obvious, don't order it if you're not a big fan of beets. The beets were cooked perfectly and their natural sweetness was tempered by the vinegar in the sherry vinaigrette that dresses the greens.

My favorite part was the layer of chopped French beans. I'd never had green beans on a sandwich, and I loved the fantastic crunch and freshness that they added. The ciabatta bread was soft with an airy interior and thin, crunchy crust. Because the bread was warm (though not so far as toasted), the goat cheese melted into a smooth, oozing spread.

Although I can't vouch for the signature Wooly Pig Sandwich at Wooly Pig Cafe, I can say that they know how to make a delicious vegetarian sandwich. I'm guessing the medical students approve.
