A Sandwich a Day: Fried Chicken at Sunshine Tavern in Portland, OR
In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know.
Opened in April 2011 by Jenn Louis and husband David Welch, Sunshine Tavern is packed steadily throughout the day and evening for their menu of casual fare featuring crisp, well topped pizza, fun salads (one of which has french fries), and comfort food entrées like fried chicken with semolina waffles. All dishes go down a little better with a well-chosen beer from their impressive selection or a frozen margarita from their slushy machine.
For me, the sandwiches steal the show (except maybe for the soft serve ice cream, which is a trip down memory lane). The tender pork belly sandwich pairs well with the arugula, red onion and provolone, and the rich-beyond-belief Monte Cristo is as delicious at it is decadent. However, the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich ($11)—one of the best things I've eaten in months—is my favorite, made with crispy, tender chicken breast and topped with blue cheese coleslaw and chili mayo. The freshly made fries it comes with are great as well.
