7 Grilled Cheese Sandwiches We Love in San Francisco

Unlike some dishes of youth that have faded into slightly disturbing memories (marshmallow fluff sandwiches, chicken in Lipton Soup "sauce"), the grilled cheese sandwich has remained true to our hearts. It's an American classic. In its very simplicity, the grilled cheese verges on near perfection. Who can improve on the glory that is cheese melted between two pieces of toasted bread?

Improve, maybe not. But grilled cheese has grown up as well. While there is nothing wrong with American cheese and buttered white bread, there is a whole exciting world of goudas and burratas, of olive oil slathered ciabatta and hot pepper relish.

From traditional to nouveau, here are seven of our favorite grilled cheese sandwiches in San Francisco. See all the grilled cheeses in the slideshow »
