The California Grilled Cheese at Good Earth Cuisine was a surprise winner; one of those sandwiches that quickly proves itself to be more than the sum of its parts. What are those parts, you ask? Just American cheese, avocado, tomatoes, and bread.

It makes sense when you break it down. American cheese is the best choice for a classic grilled cheese, and here it becomes almost like a condiment in its gooeyness. Then there are the ripe California avocados (so creamy, so delicious); there's at least one whole one piled up over the cheese.

The tomato slices are thick, juicy, and riper than you'd expect in the fall. The bread is thinner than the traditional Italian loaf but worked well, giving enough contrast to the soft, melty center without making it difficult to bite through the rather tall sandwich.

This sandwich is so large, you can split it with another person and end up with a pretty cheap lunch. It's $6.50 for the whole, $3.25 for half.
