A Sandwich A Day: Mexican Cheesesteak from San Lucas Pizza in Philadelphia
In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Ever since I went to San Lucas for their amazing al pastor and carnitas pizza, I've been meaning to get back to find out what their Mexican cheesesteak is all about. Like many Mexican pizza places, at San Lucas a lot of Mexican and American foods sit on the menu side by side—pepperoni pizza with a side of tacos, bacon cheese fries and a 2-liter of Jarritos? Sure. And sometimes the two worlds collide and you (hopefully) get something amazing.

San Lucas has a menu of regular cheesesteaks, but on the bottom is the Steak Ala Mexican ($6.25), standard Philly steak meat cooked with tomato, onion, and jalapeƱos, and covered in melted mozzerella on a squishy roll with a side of fries. It's a good cheesesteak, but not exactly the holy grail authentic ethnic-fusion cheesesteak I wanted it to be. I was hoping for more spice, or just more Mexican-ness—the smokey chipotle sauce that's on their pizza might do the trick.
Looks like they also have a cheesesteak burrito on the menu—maybe that's the way to go.
